FW 7.0 : transfers between devices

Supposed to fixed ! Not for me, it's still working randomly at best. Still useless...
Must be using the same bugged chip causing persistent (more than a year) problems in the "Connect Functions"... features, phone and remote.
Is it me or has someone been able to make it work ?
  • After doing many incremental upgrades, I decided to back up my .fit files and do a hard reset after this upgrade. Not sure if it was helpful or not, but mine seems to be working very well.
  • Did you tranfer one or many files like saved rides with another 1030, in both ways, multiple times without error messages?
  • I did 2-3 times with courses , but only course files
It was ok between 1030 and other 1030 and between 1030 and 520
  • Thank you for you testimony. You're bringing doubts in my mind.
Usually, I have no problem transfering to and from an Edge 1000 but I did not tried it with new V7.0.
Yesterday, I had success 3 or 4 times between our (mine and wife) two Edges 1030... then it's stop working. Got the error message.
Please, if possible, try it again today and let me know. Did you made and exported your courses with GConnect or RWGPS? Are they .FIT or .TCX files?
  • After making tests with the same course in those 3 file formats (« .fit », « .tcx » and « .gpx ») on my Edges, I had success transfering with the file saved in « .fit » format.
The files were exported from RWGPS in my PC's Download directory then copied in my Edge Newfiles directory.
Have I miss something? Are « .fit » files the new standard? On my Edge 1000, I was saving and transfering files saved in « .tcx» .
    Can someone test my hypothesis?
My 3 test files are available in this « .zip » :
  • I honest don t understand what you are doing, why you need to copy files.?

As far as I know garmin 1030 ,after you copy the files in newfolder, it is converting internaly files from gpx, tcx in fit file and move that file in the folder for each specific ( Courses, segments etc)

The file transfers are not done using "\Garmin\NewFiles" because that folder is typically empty.

Courses are transferred from the files in "\Garmin\NewFiles". The files in that folder are always FIT files.

Garmin has used FIT files for many years.

"\Garmin\NewFiles" is used to tell the unit that there are files to load (as course, etc).

When you turn the device on, it converts each file in "\Garmin\NewFiles" and deletes them from that folder.

TCX and GPX files are converted to FIT (FIT files are binary and much smaller than the text/xml TCX and GPX formats).

  • I took a plan route from RWGPS and exported it to 3 courses saved in TCX, GPX or FIT format on my Windows PC in the download directory.

To put the 3 courses on my Edge 1030, I copied the 3 files on the Garmin Newfiles directory. I do nothing else on the Edge except ejecting USB from my PC.

After opening the Edge, my 3 new courses appear in Navigation, Course, Saved courses.

To transfer a course to another Edge, I choose Connected Features, Device Transfer, Share Files, Courses, Select All or the file by name.
The person on the other Edge sees my devices in his Nearby Connections and can select the file(s) I want to transfer.

What I am trying to tell is that the originally saved TCX or GPX won't transfer to the other Edge. I get an error message : Try again. Only the originally saved FIT do transfer.
    Is this new?
  • No. The transfer process has only ever support FIT files.

When I had my Edge 1000, I do remember making files transfer with two friends that used Edge 1000. The courses where first created with RWGPS and saved as « .tcx » files before dropping them in the NewFiles directory of my Edge 1000.
Maybe the Edge 1000 conversion to « .fit » was different from Edge 1030.
Now, RWGPS offers the option to save directly as « .fit » file. That's what I'll use for my future route planning.
    And, finally, maybe I'm wrong...!
But I will check with my friends that still own Edges 1000 if we're able to transfer originally saved « .tcx » between us.
    Thank you all...
