How to add waypoint and show in "Crs. Pt. Dist" field?

Helllo,

I'm trying to add waypoints in course at the summit just like this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp-59JFRTB0&t=121s&index=40&list=WL

First, I did the course in GPSies.com with the waypoints, but and I added to Garmin Connect Mobile all the waypoints dissapeared (first problem). So I added the waypoints in Garmin connect and sent to 1030.

I set up the screen just like him and the waypoints are visible in map screen. But in the elevation screen the Crs. Pt. Dist. does not show de distance.

When I add the GPX file via PC the waypoints do not dissapeared, but does not work either.

Anyone could help me?

Why Garmin Connect Mobile is deleting the waypoints?

Why when the waypoints are there it does not show the distance in Crs. Pt. Dist. field?

Thanks in advance

  • GPX does not support course points. You would need to export as either TCX or FIT to get course points in the file.

    Are you sure?

    Because when I open the GPX file the waypoints are there.

    Ex.:

    <wpt lat="-27.2115629" lon="-48.9352405">
    <ele>364.00000</ele>
    <name>Summit 1</name>
    <sym>summit</sym>
    <type>Summit</type>
    </wpt>

    But even when I added waypoint via GCM the waypoint did not show.
  • That is a waypoint, not a course point. They are similar in concept, but are not interchangeable.
  • I spent some time reading and learning more about Course Points. I created a course in Garmin Connect that I've been riding lately, and added five course points. I added the Course Pt Dist field to my map screen. Tomorrow, I'll navigate this course, and see how the course points work for me.

    Glad I found this discussion, and the info provided!

    Interresting.

    I tought that could be the problem but I didn't find anything about this difference.

    Strangely when I added the course point via GCM it didn't work either.

    My GCM is in portuguese but I suposse that it adds course point and not waypoint, right?
  • If I want to add coursepoints into my course (e.g. being nearby pub, summit etc.) I use plotaroute.com online editor. It is the only editor I know which anable me to add a coursepoint into a course. Than I must use TCX or FIT format for the file. Put the file into NewFile directory and that is all. Quite easy. Waypoints can't be used for the thing, they are used different way. The weird thing is that coursepoints support is not mentioned in the Garmin manual for e1030. And now I am not sure if the function of NewFile directory is mentioned in documentation at all.
  • My experience is that the only way course points work is when you create them in Garmin Connect web app, or the Connect Mobile App, and then transfer it to the Edge natively. This will transfer a FIT file. If you do things with another service and a TCX or GPX file, it never works. Maybe different services use the same terms but the implementation differ. So what to do if you have a GPX ? I import it using the import function of Garmin Connect, and then add the course points with the web course editor. From there it is all Garmin flow. This always works for me.
  • Garmin Connect support for coursepoints is very primitive and poor. And by the way both FIT and TCX files have courpoints, definitely.
  • Ridewithgps (RWGPS) supports course points just fine. RWGPS writes its cuesheet items as course points to TCX and FIT files. You can add your own custom cuesheet items (which also get written out as course points).

    There are a limited number of types. Ones for turns (obviously) and a few others (summit. valley, water, food, danger, aid, climb, 4th category, 3rd category, 2nd category, 1st category, Hors category, sprint).

    Course points are sort-of like waypoints but, maybe, they should be considered as a list of highlighted track points.

    I use this approach too. It's easy.
    It is not necessary but first I create a GPX track with Garmin Basecamp (I find it easier to create tracks/courses with). Next I import the GPX in plotaroute.com and then add a course point.
    I use the Crs Pnt Dist (for distance) and Ascent to Next (remaining ascent to the top of a climb) for when I'm in the mountains. It works good.
