Edge 1030 Consistently Under Reading Temperature by 2 or 3 Celsius

My Edge has consistently under read temperature. Today's ride was 5 or 6c, Garmin read 2 to 3c.
Is there any way to calibrate, or is this a hardware fault I could expect a replacement for?
  • For me it is normal. My is about +/-2 Celsius.
  • Same for me. Beyond the actual accuracy of the sensor, keep in mind the reading will change if you are in the sun, the shade, the wind and I am sure other factors.. It gives you an indication. Beside you body may "feel" a different temperature while you ride depending on the effort, the wind, humidity, etc.
  • ...and - no. No calibration available.
  • It used to read 4 degrees too high, that was fixed in a software update about a year ago, I think mine is pretty accurate these days. You might be able to write a CIQ data field that takes the temperature and adds 2 degrees if it really bothers you.
  • Even my 1030 estimate temperature about 3 degrees less than it is in reality.

The temperature sensor in the 1030 is inferior to that in the 1000. The 1000 has a metal plate on the underside of the casing, which must have the temperature sensor attached to it, as the 1000 is far quicker to respond to temperature changes than the 1030, which lacks such a direct connection between the sensor and the surroundings. When my wife and I exit from our garage, which is at around 20°C, and start a ride where the outside temperature is only just above freezing, the temperature reading on her 1000 stabilises at the outside temp within a kilometre or two. My 1030 requires at least twice as long for the temp reading to reach equilibrium. And the same happens when the bikes have been sitting in the sun at a cafe and both units are showing a ridiculously high temperature when we set off - the 1000 temp reading returns to ambient far more rapidly.
  • My 1030 is 4-5F too low as well consistently. This is compared with another cyclecomputer I have that seems to accurately display temperature (when not in in direct sunlight). This other Planet Bike cyclecomputer ($35) consistently matches temperatures I see on store signs as well as Wunderground temps for nearby locations. I know there are outliers in temperature sensors and so I take the average of various sources and Planet Bike is almost always spot on, whereas 1030 is too low. The only place 1030 is a bit better is when riding in direct sunlight. Then, being too low is actually closer to the real temperature.
  • I just got a Garmin 830 and have observed that this is the first Garmin device I've had where the temperature is not too low and actually matches what my cyclecomputer and weatherunderground shows around me. Nice.
