TrainingPeaks structured workout issues

The 1030 has issues with accepting structured workouts built in TrainingPeaks, which worked fine on the 810. One issue is that the workout step type labels have changed in the 1030 but not in TraininngPeaks. The active step in an interval workout is typically labelled "active" or "work" in the TrainingPeaks workout builder, which was recognized and handled correctly by the 810. However, the 1030 for some reason no longer recognizes either of those labels and decides to label those workout steps as "other". Garmin should coordinate with TrainingPeaks so that both companies use the same labels for this field.

A more serious issue is that TrainingPeaks workout builder can specify both cadence and power targets in the same workout step. The 810 handled this correctly but the 1030 simply drops the cadence targets. This is a big problem if your coach creates workout steps with both cadence and power, which is useful.

Another issue is that it was possible to enter text in the TrainingPeaks workout builder that displayed properly on the 810. That does not seem possible on the 1030. The result is that the user will see a step labelled "other", with only a power target and neither a cadence target nor an explanatory note. Good luck remembering what cadence targets were associated with each interval step with a power target.

Personally, I found the step type names and method of operation between TrainingPeaks and the 810 to be intuitive and usable. By changing the features and labels arbitrarily and not coordinating with TrainingPeaks, 1030 users have lost valuable functionality without gaining anything. Any thoughts?
  • Definently agree with above. Since garmin 1030 s positioned as training computer it should have dispaly properly workouts with comments and right instuctions from most popular training system used by coaches and athletes. I will be happy to see these instructions from TP on my garmin device too. So, garmin if it depends on you please add these features to your flagship device. The training will be easier with that.

I hope it depends on you and you hear customers voice ;)

    Thank You
  • I agree with the above former speakers!
  • Me too! I had to stop using Garmin for training
  • I suggest that you raise a ticket with Training Peaks to resolve the issue.
  • I think that is not TP issue. As mentioned in first post this worked with Edge 810. So it seems to be broken in 1030. It it would be TP issue it should not work in 810 as well. Right?
  • TP are creating a FIT file. They way that FIT file is treated on and Edge 1030 is not working for you. There are two options; Get TP to change the file to comply with the requirement of the Workout code on an Edge 1030 or get Garmin to examine the file and change the firmware to 'comply' with what is in TP's FIT file.

The first option sounds far more likely to get a result than the second.
  • Sooo, I issued a ticket to TP support. Below is the answer from Alec - Training Peaks representative.
    Hi Marcin,

Thank you for the email. Unfortunately, due to the way that Garmin reads Structured Workout files from TrainingPeaks, Cadence instructions and notes will not be displayed on any Garmin device for a Structured Workout.

Sorry for this limitation. I recommend reaching out to Garmin about this to request it as a feature. I hope this helps. Please reach out with any questions.

    Happy Training,

All we can to do is to wait to Garmin ...
  • Post the FIT of the workout file here and I will take look
  • Sure,

this is workout file exported from TP
  • The example workout attached above only has power, no cadence target. Are you saying that the Edge strips the cadence out on the 1030 and not 810? If so could you attach the workout from the 810 that contains both power and cadence as a target.?
