I too am afflicted by this issue. Gloves that always worked flawlessly with the edge 1000 don't with the 1030. No advance warnings anywhere. They just don't and so inflict more misery and an additional financial burden onto the owners.
I did find that pressing hard in the hope the screen would eventually sweep, simply set off incident detection instead.How nice!

The only good thing about buying the 1030- is that the retailer didn't have the battery extender in stock. At the time it was a disappointment. Now? I'm delighted!

The 1030 has a different type screen than the 1000. Just use gloves for touch screens. Iphones need these special gloves too. Regular gloves can be easily modified with conductive thread.

If you have a favourite pair of gloves you like to wear and they don't respond to the screen touches fine some conductive thread weave into a finger tip or look for some carbon cloth. The 1030 screen is pretty good except for the delamination around the edges

Today I was delighted to find I could swipe in gloves. Alas the vile inconsistency that plagues so much of this unit bit back with a vengeance, refusing to swipe again. I cannot overstate the dangerous distraction this represents, not only trying to make it do something its supposed to but the incredible inconsistencies that mean it might or it might not!
Bike fell during a pee stop and preventing the incident detector notifying everyone was impossible with gloves and damn tricky without.

All, I think the issue is actually that Garmin uses a capacitive screen as stated in https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/fitness/enhance-ride-new-edge-1030/ but misrepresents how it should work in the following statement

"...Ideal for riding no matter the weather conditions, the Edge 1030 features a 3.5-inch high-resolution, capacitive touch panel display that is quick and responsive – even when wet or used with gloves."

Capacitive screens, like the one on your iPhone, only work when the electrical current on the screen variation is completed. Most gloves don't do this.

So for those that get the screen to work with gloves on they're probably wet or you're getting lucky. Either way it will be hit or miss unless you use gloves with a conductive fiber in the fingertip. Check out Wirecutter for some gloves that "should" work.

I'm not saying this is the definitive answer but reading this thread and the information given, unless Garmin responds otherwise, I'd expect the above to be accurate and hope it helps.

You could always get the Garmin remote to change your screens... Oh wait that still doesn't work. Sorry.

For me, the remote always (!) works fine... except when my phone (Apple 5c) is connected. So I always ride with no phone connected.

I absolutely agree (tested with iPhone X and NOKIA 5).
So I‘m riding without phone-connection, too.

(of course - it‘s a shame that Garmin just won‘t admit it...)
