1030 refuses to go into mass storage mode

I tried resets, I tried different usb cables, I tried different laptops, I have tried the procedure which I have found in the internet (disconnect, power off, push lap/rest button, reconnect to laptop) all without success. Any idea what to do apart from sending it back ?
  • You can try downloading Garmin usb drivers.

I also assume that you installed Garmin Express in all the laptops you have tried?
  • yes, I have dowloaded the garmin drivers and yes I have G express. Still nothing. The usb is charging the device but the laptop does not see it...
  • Try this procedure. I found it in this forum awhile ago.

"Try getting the unit in to mass storage mode by plugging the unit into the usb port. Press and hold lap/reset while pressing the power button for about 5 seconds. The screen will go blank – let up on the power button at that time but keep holding lap/reset. This should force it to mass storage."
  • The USB cables that you have tried. Are they Garmin cables? Not all USB cables work the same as the factory Garmin cable.

Some USB cables only deliver charging which might explain the problem. If you haven't already, try using your phone's usb cable as that will definitely allow charging and data comms.

I must say though, that the usb port on my 1030 has occasionally been problematic and was on day 1. Doesn't locate as securely as you'd expect and does sometimes necessitate a reinsertion. Certainly, reinserting has invariably resolved the problem. But in your case, if you have it charging, a poor connection is unlikely to be the cause.
  • I used to have the same thing on Edge 520 and after detailed inspection of a technician the culprit was discovered. It was broken PIN on the micro USB port of 520.
  • I had a similar problem with my Fenix 5x... After trying different cables and different computers turns out the problem was the watch itself. If your 1030 has never gone into USB mode then I would call Garmin. They are going to want to send you a replacement cable first, they are going to want you to re-install GC, and restart your computer. After all that is done the only thing left is the 1030 itself.
They are very helpful while on the phone and, if they are going to replace your unit, ask them about the rapid replacement program. Basically you pay for a replacement unit and they send it out to you. You get your money back when they get your unit. This way you are not without the 1030.
  • ZuhMan's procedure did the trick for my 1030. It occasionally wouldn't go in to mass storage mode (turning fully on instead) when plugged in to the PC. However this lap/reset button trick worked perfectly.

Try this procedure. I found it in this forum awhile ago.

  • I've had this issue for weeks. I had tried different cables without success. Read this thread. Inspected the connection pins in my Garmin but did not see anything out of the ordinary. Tried the "Press and hold lap/reset while pressing the power button for about 5 seconds" suggestion and that didn't work either. Finally, based on this comment "Some USB cables only deliver charging which might explain the problem", I decided to make sure the usb cable I was using worked for data transfer so I used a cable from my kindle. It worked, yeah. Thank you all. :-)

  • Same problem here. With Software 7.50 as well as 7.87. Can force it with Lap button into this mode, but does not go allone
