Can I trust the 1030?

Next month I'm going to buy either the 1030 or the Wahoo Bolt.
After long months of following this forum I'm interested in views of those who have it with a very short question: does it do what it's supposed to do and can you trust either its operation or data?
If it doesn't perform and on a regular basis then I would opt for the Bolt which might do less and less data analysis but can be reliable to work as intended each time.
This is not for bashing and I would really like to have the 1030...but only if I can rely on it on a regular basis.
  • I am not sure you can compare the two. It is like comparing a Ford Fiesta to an Audi S4. I have owned every new Garmin GPS. Yes, every first version of firmware for every device (810, 1000, and now 1030) is broken with bugs that were fixed in a previous hardware version. That being said, Garmin has fixed most of those issues. The company is far less arrogant than before and listens on customer forums. I was one of the first to get the 1030 in Canada. yes, it had its bugs but I can say that firmware 6.00 (for me anyway) appears very stable. I have not had any issues. It works very well. The battery life is awesome. The new color display despite looking more faded inside is amazing outside in the bright light. At the end of my ride, the ride syncs up with my iPhone and get automatically uploaded to Garmin Connect & Strava.

The Bolt is your basic black/white GPS whereas the 1030 is a new color display. I don't think you can compare the two...

IMHO you should get a 1030.
  • I use the Edge 1030 almost every day. It seems that about once per month, it has some kind of issue. The last time I had a problem was August 18, 2018 on a speedy 240 km and the fit file was corrupted. I was able to recover the file using this website:
    https://www.fitfiletools.com/#/ctf#view

Personally, I find the following annoying:
    1) 1-step save on the touch screen when pausing an activity.
    2) The activity profiles are inferior to the bike profiles one could use on the Edge 800.
    3) Cues are limited to 10 characters. I've been told there is no character limit on the Wahoo products.

Since Dec 2017, I have about 7000 miles on my (2) 1030 - the first was replace free of charge a few weeks ago by Garmin due to the halo effect on the screen. I have not lost data for a single ride over all that time and all those miles. Sure, I can't get live tracking to work, ever, but that could be the Garmin Connect Mobile app, their servers, or who know's what... Would I buy it again or opt for something different? I would buy it again, in a heart beat!

BTW, I did have one corrupt fit file from a ride with the 1030 some time ago, but a helpful Garmin person on the forums here fixed it within a few hours, and all the data was intact.

Yes, you can trust the 1030.

Next month I'm going to buy either the 1030 or the Wahoo Bolt.

Comparison is not equal, architecture is completly different....and then not speaking of the size. First of all the 1030 is for me reliable however had the blue Halo issue but got a new device but it has always operated very well.

    I have used the Bolt for a few months extensively, sold it, why;

    1. The Companion App is a joke.
    2. Could not use Garmin Connect anymore because their FIT file couldn't be imported anymore, I have heard that it is possible again never tested it.
    3. Navigation function is poor, if you can speak of a navigation function at all because the Bolt is not a navigation system. It just shows you the way, chevron, nothing more nothing less, you can NOT go of course otherwise after 2km you will never see your route again.
    4. No panning function.
    5. I have also the new 520 plus, it is better readable then the Bolt.
    6. No activity profiles, if you have more bikes....
    7. And so on.....

resume: Bolt is simple cycling computer, the 1030 is the way to go. If you want good navigation, smaller device a bit of less of functionality go for the 520 Plus.

I stopped using my 1030 6 months ago as the updates were breaking more than they fixed! i bought a wahoo Bolt and for most general cycling activities its been bomb proof. After a ride it uploads straight away like my 1030 use to! If you look at your ride on your phone in the wahoo app you can export the ride by email to yourself and then save it to your pc to then import that file into Garmin connect. Strava goes straight away with no fuss. Its not anywhere near as expensive as a 1030 so you cant compare like for like. 'But' it actually works..........

I bought a 1030 for some of the features that wahoo does not have and for the most part I ride alone so I plan on picking up some of the accessories that work with the 1030 (cycliq was a failure), its navigation feature is much better than Wahoo especially if you are not familiar with the area...but the Elemnt is bomb proof...right now I use both...it looks stupid but I've had a Garmin before and I'm gun shy....just out and worth consideration is the Pioneer head unit...I understand they worked with Wahoo...although I not sure on the ant networking stuff...it appears to have color maps with re routing.

Don't do it! The 1030 is a bitter disappointment, alienating me to all things Garmin.
On the bike, it is at times a very dangerous distraction.
Pluses over the 1000 are limited only to the bigger battery. Bigger screen is not easy to read indoors and fails to work with full gloves that never gave a minutes problem with the 1000 (Budget£).
I'd anticipated that the 1030 would offer other improvements and enhancements to justify 'upgrading' but Garmin appear to view such logic as wholly unreasonable! These forums tell you all you need to know about the breathtaking range of problems experienced by users.Given that this sad & sorry state of affairs has existed 13 months, it is self-evident that the effort applied towards resolution was wholly inadequate.
One year on from launch, the flagship product from the market leader remains fatally flawed. Lack of movement towards resolution, strongly suggesting it will be dumped without a second thought for the poor saps who've persevered as unpaid guinea pigs. It simply defies all logic that so many unresolved problems could remain outstanding after 13 months if G was committed to resolution.
    CAVEAT EMPTOR!
  • And...again...I either get very definite for or very definite against.
Nothing in the middle and lots of emotion.
    It is simple for me:
It has been out long enough to be stable enough, or not.
Feature wise I know the deferences between the 1030 and the Bolt.
I'm going to use it for MTB XC training (complete workouts through my trainer given by him and built by either GC or TP) and long navigation rides.
I am a freak for data and I tend to rely upon it, especially when it comes to inrevals/ HR/ IF/ TSS/ elevation and route.
I am using my FR935 and love it, as well as its GC environment and its data analysis in TP.
Although I wish to have another GC instrument it shall be a tool and not something to worry about.
I have no problem with dealing with complicated devices and do it with ease.
I do have a problem with dealing with unreliable data quality.
So...if the 1030 is still unreliable after FW 6 then I shall go with the much simpler Bolt that shall deliver the base quality that I shall use with TP.
I'm not looking for perfect and know that the data given is as accurate as can be with such small devices and not meant to fly me to space.
Reliable dependable data is good enough for me and I hope to get it with the 1030...if can be...
Not looking for lovers or haters but for expirienced persons.
  • I think that 1030 FW6.0 can be trusted, yes. Previous FW versions gave me grief but the current one works well for me. The unit behaves as expected every time. Totally reliable for me. Watches have their limits related to their screen size, battery capacity, GPS/ANT+ antennae, memory and processing power. Try loading a 100 km course into a 935 and see how the watch freezes or reboots or custom Garmin IQ data fields stop working. It can work, of course, but you can't rely on it anymore. Things like this never happened to me with 1030 on the current firmware. Never crashed, never frozen, never lost any data or displayed anything other than what it should.
