Recalculation off doesn't

I'm presently touring in Europe using courses that I worked out beforehand with RWGPS. I very definitely have recalculation set to off in the profile (I've checked a couple of times), but I've noticed repeatedly when straying off course that the 1030 recalculates (says it's recalculating and then puts the recalculated course on the map).

The 1030 is running FW 6.00 and I performed a reset on it after the FW upgrade.
  • Is it recalculating a route to the end point or is it computing a route to take you back to the point where you left the course? I suspect it could be the latter, which is not really a recalculation.

It's usually the latter, though a couple of times it has directed us a considerable distance along an alternate route and then the pink line suddenly terminates with a U-turn symbol, and we have to improvise from there.

This is a well known bug. It is widely reported  all around these forums and happens on all new units (820/830/1030/530plus)  probably because they share the same chunks of software. Unhappily it turns these units almost useless when riding mtb off road and it has side effects  when returning to the original course. This is something that worked fine on older units (800/810/touring). Unhappily, Garmin is ignoring the several complains about this issue.

  • I also turned off "Off Course Alerts" and it stoped recalculating. It solves that problem but then of course you won't get the alert either. So you need to check the map manually. But al least it won't recalculate and then get lost. You pick the least annoying to you.
