Garmin wake-up, even the basics doesn't work

I am a user of Garmins for many years (most on bicycles). I had my problems with them, but last years it became worse. At least, it reaches my limits. When you read this forum, it is not hard to come to the conclusion that the Garmin organisation is completely running out of hand. After launching the Edge 1030, it immediatlty appears like a beta-version, and that is already a long time ago and hasn't changed so far. At least there was time enough to fix even the basics. Instead, Garmin goes on adding new features while forgetting about the basics. While many of these new features depend on connectivity, so far there was only one firmware version that managed to connect the Edge 1030 with my phone (Android 8.0). Just installed the new 5.33 firmware, and again no connection possible. To name a few basics more: shutting down by itself, not completely shutting down when intended, loosing GPS-signals or unable to find these. Not necessary to go on, because you can read more about it in other topics on the forum. The end of last year I came from Edge 1000 to Edge 1030 with the hope to get rid of returning hardware problems with the touch screen of the Edge 1000 (Garmin replaced it three times). New to me at that time was that Garmin was not actively supporting me in finding a good solution. I had good experiences with their services in the years before, but last time the discussions became hard and "they took their time". And now, the "halo" has shown up on the screen of my Edge 1030 (like many of us already experienced before and still do).
This is just to say that I am at the end of the road with Garmin. And others are warned.
  • I have no major issues with the Edge 1030; iPhone X user. Just saying that your mileage may vary...

EDIT: other than the Edge Remote being completely useless 50% of the time...
  • Got mine a week ago, works faultlessly, connected to iPhone 5SE and the remote control works as well.

    Mine works pretty well.
I still has the occasional shutdown, the remote still disconnects occasionally, also my VivoActive 3 disconnects when broadcasting HR.

Other than that I push start/stop, everything automatically uploads to Strava. The integration with other health data in Garmin Connect is very good.

If you want great hardware without REALLY immature software, try a Karoo. Speaking of which, Garmin better cook up something nice for their next 10xx line as the Karoo hardware is amazing by comparison. It's basically a square, energy efficient Android Phone with 1G data only. Super Snappy maps. I would recommend going Android as well and running the legacy stuff Monkey-C stuff in a Java Run-Time.
  • I have 2 1030's and they work flawlessly for the things I care about. Courses are great and the maps are very detailed with turn directions perfect. They work with 3 sets of pedal power meters that includes Garmin Vector 2's and PowerTap P1 pedals. 2 different speed sensors, 3 different heart rate monitors (2 Garmins and 1 Viiii). Control both my Varia Radar and front light.

My first 1030 was involved in a crash so it's now connected to my indoor trainer with a Kickr. It has worked great.

Probably you just got a bad unit and should return it.
  • My 1030 works fine, as are most 1030's in the field. Maybe you have faulty device with some hardware error. You might want to exchange it for a replacement.
  • I got mine a couple of months ago, it's my 8th Garmin sports GPS and my 7th Edge. I think it has a ton of features that work flawless. I even am able to ride my own courses against a virtual partner and using live segments while using tbt instructions without being unnecessary distracted. The Varia Radar works well, different power meters and other sensors work well. Overal I'm very happy with it but still have a few things that could be better.

    - Zoom level Group track should be choosable a stay that way.
    - If recalculation is set to off it keeps telling you "make a U-turn" until you stop the course.
    - Would like to see more data fields on a map.
    - Have some issues with calibration triggering for my Vector 3.
    - Route calculation might be a bit quicker.

Next to that I have some issues with Connect IQ apps.

    - XERT fields claim "no connection" often (when live track works)
    - Accuweahter minute cast doesn't work.
  • On a recent cycling holiday we rode with a new Edge 1030 with version 5 firmware and an old Edge Touring. Navigate was all we did; we had no linked accessories and the maps and routes were identical. The Touring was fine but the 1030 gave innumerable route recalculation errors, often crashed during rides, stopped connecting with bluetooth and eventually corrupted a fit file needing a hard reset to function at all. We ended up with the lead rider using the Edge Touring because the 1030 was so unreliable. After spending so much on what seemed a big upgrade I am not at all satisfied.
  • I like my 1030 but uploading to my iPhone 7 is a crapshoot. It will upload fine for 2-3 days and then refuses for a week. Lately, the Garmin app on the phone gives me errors saying that it can't sync because my 1030 is "busy." What the heck does that mean? I've ended the ride and saved it so what is it "busy" about? Reboot the 1030, reboot the phone, reboot the app... can't sync, 1030 is "busy." Garmin software has always been a little daft.

After upgrading to firmware 6.0 it appeared that the basics remain untouched. Still experiencing unexpected shotdowns, freezing screens, loosing GPS positioning, no or intermitted connections with phone. Also after several master resets. This is all software. Besides, there is a hardware problem that Garmin not appears to treat seriously: the "halo". The halo on the touch screen of my 1030 is growing, an issue that become epidemic. The problem with this is well known by Garmin but, according to others on the forum, will most probably never be solved by them (look what others on this forum have noticed/experienced: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-1030-aa/1304483-edge-1030-halo. They exchange the unit with another one having the same problemtic screen. Lucky you having a unit that appears to operate as intended (so far).

I feel the same. I had for years a 800 and later a touring plus and they worked fine. Two years ago I sold my older units to buy the 820. Further to several crashes and bugs, I  never was able to put it working as well as my older units. I can assure that I am quite proficient on these edge units and I know pretty well all navigation options (and bugs). Unhappily, these bugs are currently spread all around all new edge families (820/1030/830/530plus), since they share the same chunks of navigation software. This is clear, since the same complains appear in all forums. It seems that Garmin pays little attention to these complaints.
