Possibility to load new Strava segment to 1030 during the middle of a ride??

In the middle of a ride, I decided I wanted to load up a new Strava segment and ride it. This segment was not one I had previously starred in Strava. Went to Strava app on phone and found segment I wanted and starred it. Then tried to get it to show up in Garmin. I went to "Segment Explore" in the settings screen of 1030. I thought this was supposed to show nearby starred segments as well as a selection of popular segments. My segment did not show up. Tried a couple times loading the screen, but it never showed up. I then tried to get it to load the segment by going to GCM and telling it to "sync" the 1030. However, it would never sync at all. I even pushed stop button, but did not end ride, no sync. In the end I just had to ride the segment based on memory. So is there anyway to star a new segment during the middle of a ride and be able to load it on the 1030 to ride without having to reset ride on the Garmin?
  • This is exactly same think i also want to get working! In my experience strave segments are actualized directly after powering on the device, but never during a ride. Adding a segment during a ride and trying to synchronize with GCM ends up mostly in shut downs/hang ups.
It's one of a lot of issues this device still has, although it's nearly one year now the 1030 is on the market, -and it was definitely my last garmin device, -every wahoo works much more stable and i think in one, two years they will also have the amount of functions like garmin, -but much more stable working.
  • GCM will not sync with the Edge if the timer is active.
  • Yes, aweatherall, that is what I observed. Unfortunately, it does not seem possible to get a new segment loaded up mid-ride. I thought that was supposed to be one of the great things about the 1030.
  • Really? Where it is written? As far as I remember you have to have all interesting segments stared and synchronized with your device. Only these segments will show on the device.

  • You can load new segments that show in the segment explore app while recording an activity. You can access this from the control pages. This should show Marquee as well as other nearby segments. If you have any starred segments in the list they will be displayed first.

  • Thanks aweatherall. Yes, I was specifically thinking of the Strava Segment Explore app as indicated here: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge1030/EN-US/GUID-2E782258-6B57-4E9A-A7E3-96E545E1374E.html

I had believed that this read data "live" off Strava each time it was accessed. In my case I had stopped during a ride. Went to Strava app and starred a new segment near me that I wanted to ride and then went to the Strava Explore App on the 1030 and the segment I had starred never showed up. So that app is kind of a black box and I wondered if anyone understands how it works.

A little testing here at home reveals - If the 1030 is powered on, then I go to Strava and star a new segment, then go to the Segment Explore app, the new segment will not show up. If I reboot the Edge, the segment will then appear.

So in all cases, it seems like segment changes on Strava require a reboot of the 1030 to become available. I had hoped this Segment Explore tool would fetch new changes real time while the 1030 was on, but apparently not.
  • I think I have figured out a trick to get the Strava Segment Explore app to show new Strava favorites added during a ride. With the 1030 running during a ride, I went to Strava and starred new segment. Then did a soft reboot of the 1030 by holding power button down 10s. When I powered 1030 on again, my ride data was still there and I was able to push start and continue with my ride. Going to Strava Segment Explore app I found that the new segment was displayed now!! It's not an optimal solution, but I think it will get the job done.
  • I tested the trick out on a ride today. Stopped. Starred new segment in Strava app. Did the soft reset on the 1030. When it came back on the segment was there in the Strava Segment Explore app and I was able to successfully ride it.
