1030 And Bluetooth Connection On Android

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere but I couldn't find mention of it.

I have a 1030 on firmware V5 and a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge running Android v8. I also have the latest version of GCM installed on the phone.

My 1030 simply will not connect to the phone by Bluetooth unless I manually run GCM. I have reinstalled GCM and repaired the devices multiple times but no joy.

Out of curiosity, I fired up my old Garmin 520 and bingo! It connected to the phone instantly, while the 1030 did nothing.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Apart from this 1 thing, the 1030 seems to be behaving itself since the V5 update.

I have the same Problem. Its especially curious because ny Fenix 5x uploads by itself without starting gcm manually...
????

Yeah, my Edge 1000 connects to the phone without needing to start GCM; when I start recording a ride Livetrack auto-starts without needing to start GCM; and when I end a ride it auto-uploads without needing to start GCM. The 1030 won't do a sodding thing with the same phone without manually starting GCM.

Yes, same problem with my Samsung S6 edge+ since the 1030 was updated to 5.0, bluetooth auto connection will no longer work.

Apart from this 5.0 seems solid, I was thinking about contacting Garmin as I'm unsure if they are aware of this issue, in any case I recommend we raise a ticket with Garmin.

Could it be a Samsung thing as my riding partner has a OnePlus 3T and it connects automatically?

I thought that it might be a Samsung thing too rob. However, the fact that my Garmin 520 connects to the Samsung phone without any problems and without running GCM seems to suggest that its not.

I have a similar problem. 1030 on 5.0 S7 Edge on Android 8.0 (a fairly recent upgrade) and latest GCM. For me, 1030 does connect to phone automatically without me doing anything. SMS notifications come in fine. However, Livetrack, which is set to auto-start, does not auto-start about 95% of the time. To get it to work, I have to manually open GCM and put it on the Livetrack tab. Then it will start. So now, in my pre-ride ritual I have to remember to manually open GCM on the phone before I start, otherwise I am trying to fiddle around with it while I am already riding. I never had to do this on Edge 1000. Just stuck phone in the pocket without thinking about it and things just worked.

If you have Android 8.0 device, check in the settings how the GCM app is being handled regarding battery/power saving.
Huawei for example disables the app, because of constant BT scans. Setting it to manual for the GCM app might change or solve some issues.

Thanks for the idea alessusnik. I had looked through all my settings in the past on the Edge S7 upon upgrading to Android 8.0. I had added GCM to the "Unmonitored Apps" from the beginning "These apps can use as much power as they want and App power monitor will not do anything to stop them". However, this never made any difference for me. GCM still will not start Livetrack for me unless I open it first. Perhaps there is another setting somewhere? I think Garmin may be dealing with issues with Android in trying to connect to phones and so it may not always be Garmin's fault things don't work, but my Edge 1000 was so reliable in connecting to the phone automatically, starting Livetrack automatically and automatically uploading my ride at the end, all without me having to touch GCM that I really wonder why they changed that great behavior with the 1030.

There is definitely a problem with the edge 1030 software here as my new fenix 5 plus is always connected with no problems or manual intervention required. This would seem to rule out phone related configuration issues.

I have accidentally found that Livetrack does start automatically for me even if I do not open GCM if I wait long enough. It takes about 2 minutes, but in the last couple rides, livetrack has started when I was down the road about 2 minutes. In both these rides I forgot to go into my phone and activate GCM, so it just auto-started. Weird though that it takes so long. Livetrack always started within 2-3 seconds after pushing start on my 1000.

I don't think it's a problem at the phone end, because I use the same phone with both an Edge 1000 and Edge 1030, and it's only the 1030 that requires GCM to be manually started before BT connection, Livetrack, activity upload etc will function.
