VO2 Max Error??

I've recently moved from an 820 to a 1030 Edge. In the rider summaries it provides the usual stats. I use HR monitor but no power meter. New to me in the 1030 is a VO2 report. I'm 48, fit and ride 4-5 days a week at high intensity often with the majority of rides in zone 4 and often with time in zone 5 above 170bpm. My weight is correctly set in Garmin Connect.

The VO2 max report indicates 81. If that were true, I'd be stunningly fit at any age! Are there any ways to confirm with settings that it's reporting accurately? I'm not really a vo2 watching type of person, and this is the first time I've ever seen a calculation for me so I have no other points of comparison.

Appreciate any insight as to how v02 is calculated by Garmin, what settings may create different variables and anyone's past experience on vo2 max accuracy within Garmin.

Thanks!

I have the same query - my VO2 just went up to 52 from 50. I am 57 years old and a regular cyclist. The 52 VO2 states that I am in the top 5% of my age group and that my fit age is 20 years old. This is not correct in my view. Any explanations would be very welcome please?

    Regards, Harry

  • My best guess: you would beat most 20 year olds in a bike race. That is how much difference being a regular cyclist makes to your cardiovascular fitness. So don't be surprised if your VO2 max is around the norm for that age group.
