1030 v5.0 Incident detection and navigation issues

To make it shorter, here's the list:

1) incident detection is far too sensitive, even stopping at crossroads turns it on which is pretty annoying. Doesn't the system recognize changes from a tilt sensor?

2) navigation sounds and direction announcements stop after faulty incident detection was reset

3) they both (sounds and voice from smartphone) work again after the route was recalculated (because of a missed turn for example) ... but ...

4) after recalculating the announcements started with first turn of the route, not the current position (quite confusing)

5) varia vision still is not updated and navigation in meters is wrong (2m instead if 200 meters, 1m instead of 100m), sharp bend warnings do not disappear from it automatically, instead I have to swipe them away

6) edge still shuts down when having live track switched on and a route may recalculate (not always but still does)

7) varia vision sometimes shows no values and I found out it depends on the order the devices are being switched on. if 1030 is on for a while and I switch on varia vision, there are no values being displayed. if varia vision is on and I switch on 1030 after it, the 1030 sends values correctly
  • I have following navigation issues:

When starting riding, and you want to navigate a saved route, while you already moving, you are asked if you want to go back to start (which is of course the start of the route) and you say no, I expect that the device navigates me back on course. It does but the recalculation takes very very long. I have to stop and wait several minutes. This is inacceptable, because the device is very fast and normally it does a well job but in that case some bad algorithm or a very bad implementation is used to navigate back on course.
I also expect at least some highlighting on the map to get back, but there isnt any. It keeps saying, even after recalculation, that Iam off course, since Iam on the route again.

I live in Austria and here, I think, the map is very good, but in a way to much details. Its sometimes hard to focus on the road.

Yeah, same here. Horrible! Additionally I'm using varia vision HUD and if I cannot take a road which is part of the route, because it is blocked by road construction, the edge tries to navigate me back to this road a few times, calculating all the time ... Then varia vision shuts down and reboots and shortly after that, 1030 shuts down and doesn't even reboot. This behavior is absolutely reproducable and any firmware contains a whole lot of reproducable bugs... It's a pain to use the features of this device and you should expect your customers to own a few of your gadgets and the edge should be able to handle them all... Or stop selling them if you can't guarantee a setup to work... Garmin, why don't you test all your setups thoroughly? Not a single ride without problems. No fun.
  • I've had similar problems with incident detection. Once, I was trying to zoom out on the map and it said it was calling 911. The next day I was simply making a turn and it said it detected an incident and I had to use the phone to ensure it didn't call the police.

Navigation: Where do I begin? Please see my other post referencing a plethora of problems with the 1030. (Topic: Varia Vision will not work after Edge 1030 update to v3.90.)

Today, I had created a route from an Activity of mine in Connect -- on the whole it seemed to navigate me well enough, but the course seemed to create all sorts of flake factors (who can be sure if it had anything to do with it -- the unit is possessed).. As usual, the Vision wasn't in sync (this time because the 1030 asked if I wanted to automatically recalc -- I said yes, and then the two lost their alignment). Simultaneously, my radar was showing up as if it had frozen. Nothing would get it back. Then the radar overlay started strobing on the 1030. So, I restarted. It came back up asking if I wanted to end/save the activity, I said no, then pressed the start key (no finish line flag appeared to tell me it wasn't recording or anything, it was behaving as if it *was* recording). It stopped recording my tracks on a huge section of my century. The Vision was still out of sync so I turned the Vision off for a long while. When I turned it on again, it synced, but then it caused the 1030 to shut down. Powered up and did the No to end/save & pressed start again. You can see where recording resumed (it wasn't when I was troubleshooting the Varia, BTW) -- it started itself back up with no indication -- who knows why. What it uploaded to connect has the right time elapsed, the right mileage total, the right elevation, but a bunch of other data is gone for tracks, speed, power -- all that stuff.

Ironically, LiveTrack shows me having ridden the entire course that I did (but it has wonky elevation). Speaking of elevation, the 'elevation remaining" field was also possessed today. And the depiction of the elevation on the course was askew by about a mile.

There are things that seem to function well on the unit -- the 1030 has a LONG list of things it does. A lot of it seems to work. But SO MUCH of it is a SKETCH FEST.

  • Hi, had today to false incident detection (then I turned it off, to avoid shocking my people) after I stopped on a steep single trail.
I think this function is not usable.

Is there a way to see in the recorded track where the incident happened? Because I looked at the 1030 after I stopped, maybe it recognised the incident earlier (aggressive breaking and sharp bend) and I didn't see it.
