Routing onto Unpaved Roads when set to avoid

I'm seeing my 1030 increasingly trying to route me onto unsuitable roads when it's in Road Bike mode and is set to avoid unpaved roads. It does this whether I set it to popularity routing or not. The screenshot is from the road through Richmond Park in Surrey, the road is one of the most popular cycling routes in the world and is part of the route ridden by 20,000+ cyclists every year in the RideLondon Surrey 100. I don;t understand why my Garmin is trying to take me off the tarmac and onto the unpaved road.

I'm on Firmware 5 and 2018 maps.

Is anyone else seeing this? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1366434.jpg
  • If it does it'll be because the mapping is saying it's suitable, not your Garmin making bad choices.
  • Where, exactly, is the screen shot at.
  • It's on Queens Road heading south from Richmond Gate to Kingston Gate, there is an unpaved road parallel to the main road and the 1030 tried to take me onto it numerous times, here's a picture of the road, clearly unsuitable for a roadbike.
There are loads more examples of the 1030 trying to take me offroad, I'll grab more screenshots and photos and post them later.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1366567.jpg

It took me a while to find it but I got there. (refer to https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=id#map=18/51.42953/-0.28746)

Sussamb is correct. I assume by 2018 maps you mean the Garmin cycle maps, which are built on OSM information.
In OSM the route you are referring to is called The Tamsin Trail. It is listed as a cyclepath.
Allowed access is set to all, foot is not specified, motor vehicles no, bicycles designated and horses unspecified.

Perhaps most tellingly is the surface is not specified.
Thus setting your Garmin to avoid unpaved will make no difference in your case.

Have you had any experience at OSM editing? It is really easy and it means you can assist in creating a better map.
  • Obvious question, were you following a course or A-B (Navigate Me To) navigation? The behavior of the Garmin can vary between the two.
If following a course, can you share the course?
    Thanks, Dave

The Edge 1030 Manual is downloadable in pdf format. Save the map from the browser and then re-open it in Adobe Reader for a more user friendly experience. . . . But the manual still does not give enough info for a 3rd party (without a 1030 device in hand) to definitively offer suggestions.

This 3rd party would speculate, however, that 1030 courses are normally created by calculation by the shortest total distance between points, not the fastest, method as is typical of automotive devices.

Therefore it may be necessary to insert intermediate waypoints along the desired "better" road to force the 1030 to use the smoother, but longer, surface. Good luck.
  • Thanks for input guys. I was navigating to a point rather than on a course. I've found quite a few places where the 1030 has tried to route me onto unpaved roads, like one just past Box Hill near Dorking this morning and another in Richmond (Surrey) where it tried to send me down a rather dangerous looking path from Richmond Hill down to Petersham road.

Peteonbike, now i know what to look for I'll look into editing the OSM maps and see if I can improve routing for everyone.

I'd say though, that the roads the 1030 is taking me off onto the unpaved roads must be ridden 100s of times more than the unpaved roads so I'd like to think popularity routing would help there.

I guess it might still be early days as popularity routing is a relatively new feature.

Regardless of the reasons behind it, I do think routing is suboptimal at the moment.

I wonder if automobile routing might be more reliable, although I saw a thread saying it's broken at the moment.

I'll give it a go on the way to work tomorrow.

A review of some of the relevant Edge 1030 threads indicates that the device may be routing as designed in default Automobile setting, but the routing is unsuitable for bicyclists if Expressways are present on the map area to be traversed. These Freeway/Eway roads may be TOO fast and smooth for bicyclist. The 1030 may or may not have enough options to satisfy every need of every cyclist without inserting waypoints. Good luck with that.
  • It's on Queens Road heading south from Richmond Gate to Kingston Gate, there is an unpaved road parallel to the main road and the 1030 tried to take me onto it numerous times...

This isn't specific enough. You need to make it easy for people to find it.

...here's a picture of the road, clearly unsuitable for a roadbike.
There are loads more examples of the 1030 trying to take me offroad, I'll grab more screenshots and photos and post them later.

Pictures are irrelevant. There's no point in providing more screen shots. The device only knows the data in the map (not what you see as unsuitable).

The issue is how the data is encoded in the map.

The OSM data (which is the source of the map data Garmin uses in the default maps provided on the unit) classify that path as "unpaved".

Maybe, somebody changed the classification recently.

I wonder if automobile routing might be more reliable, although I saw a thread saying it's broken at the moment.

If there is automobile routing available, there should be an "avoid highways" (motorways) option. That might work better for you.

People asking for help should do that work.

Perhaps most tellingly is the surface is not specified.

The surface is indicated as "unpaved" (maybe, someone updated it recently?)
