Customize Workout Data Screen

On the workout data screen instantaneous power is displayed. This is not very usable since the power jumps around quite a bit. How can I change the workout screen power display to 3s or 10s average.

If this is not possible, is there a workaround to create a new data screen which will display the target power for the interval. I was able to create a custom data screen with most of the information I need but cannot find a data field which gives the target power for the workout interval.

Long press it then it will highlight around that box, then tap it again. Then select power and choose your preferred option.
  • The long press and tap works for a regular data screen. I could not get it to work when in the Workout data screen. Am I missing something? Are you able to change the power to 10s power on your workout screen?

Ah must be different then. I've not looked at mine to be honest, I just use custom pages.
  • Can anyone from Garmin comment on this.

Not being able to change the level of power averaging on the Workout page makes the workout function almost useless. The power indicated on the workout page is instantaneous power, which fluctuates too much to be usable.

The Workout data page should have the option to set the power display to 3s, 10s or 30s average power so that it can be used to guide the workout effort.

Is it possible to do this with the present firmware?
  • I would love this feature and I think is BASIC, workout data screen is not usable with instant power, I don’t why we can’t configure this screen.
  • I thought the screen used whatever power value you selected when building the workout. E.g. if you used 10 second average power as your target in the workout then that is the value it shows on the workout page.
  • Alan,

Thanks for the tip. I opened a workout on the 1030 and edited it. I was able to select a 10s Average Power Zone on the device. If you create your workout on the 1030, then you can select 10s Average Power as a target.

I tried creating a workout in Training Peaks, Garmin Connect PC and Garmin Connect Mobile but did not find an option to specify a workout with 10s Average Power as the target. It appears that the only way to do it is to create the workout on the 1030 directly, or edit an already uploaded workout which was created on another platform.

Is this correct? Am I missing something?
  • Agree...., the standard workout data screen is not great and doesn't allow customization, which shouldn't be hard to implement - an easy improvement Garmin!
  • I thought the screen used whatever power value you selected when building the workout. E.g. if you used 10 second average power as your target in the workout then that is the value it shows on the workout page.

    Alan,

Can a workout using 10 sec avg power be created with Garmin Connect? See my post #8 above.
  • I believe it only supports instantaneous power and then you would need to edit it on the Edge. The old Garmin Training Center product did allow you to do this and I think a plug-in to sporttacks does.
