Firmware 5.0 First Ride Impressions

Since 4.0 came out I had nothing but problems. I had strange resets for no reason, Strava Segments crashed the Garmin, I would lose connection to my power meters and had random warnings for non-existent turns. The beta firmwares, along with gimping functionality by disconnecting it from my phone, fixed it mostly. Today I installed 5.0 and went out on a ride with it connected to my phone and with Strava Segments turned on. Everything was perfect! No crashed, no issues with Strava Segments and not a single freeze or lost signal on my power meter. Seems like 5.0 fixed everything for me so far.

2nd 33 mile ride on 5.0 yesterday resulted in Live Track working as designed. No other hitches. Used 13% of battery capacity.
  • I am running a Quarq Dfour with the latest firmware (7), and experienced a similar drop out to others midway through a 90 km ride. I believe it was triggered by performing a manual zero offset on the power meter (in a quarq that means pedaling backwards 4 times). I noted that although the power and cadence read zero during the dropout, the power meter showed connected, and switching it off and on on the 1030 did not fix the problem. I had to stop and momentarily remove and reinstall the quarq battery (resets the quarq) for it to restore the power and cadence readings.

Today's 120km ride Went well. The Edge behaved good until the end. Today it didn't auto upload the ride. Hade to "manually" do that through the history.
First time for me that it dosen't auto upload.
  • Had my first random shutdown today on v5.00...!

My S8 was connected - which probarly was the reason for it.

What's your take on that Shawn...?

  • 5.0 seems to be working pretty well so far. Auto feature for Live-Track is now working. I've had two rides that auto-update didn't work and course routing has been good. What I'm still getting though is Varia radar disconnect alerts, yet still appears to be working; getting false positives and late identification of vehicles. (NOT terrain related....I'm talking clear, unobstructed 100yd field of view.)

    Much improved all around though.
  • Grrr......why am I always getting "Unapproved" posts?
  • Unfortunately, Automobile routing mode remains unusable with the 2018.10 maps on this firmware but works correctly with OSM generic maps. I have reported this over a month ago and have yet to receive any clarifying update on the issue.
  • First Ride for me yesterday with 5.0.
    Everything ok for me to.:)

Third ride on 5.0 today. Text alerts worked, BT dropped out so stopped to try and connect it again. Which it did as soon as my phone was near my Garmin.
also find my phone/Garmin only connect with my phone GPS on.

Live track not working at all again, the GCM had a message saying error sending live track alert. Before it was starting but dropping out.

Change points are I've had the GCM running on my phone and I added my email to the alert list. So may be it doesn't like having multiple contacts. So I'll try with just my wife's email in the list.

Recovery advice seems to be working better.

Upload is still wonky. Manual upload from 1030 fails every time (even when 1030 shows phone as connected). Syncing from my phone a few times usually gets the upload to go through.
Remote still doesn't work consistently with phone connected, and can't seem to get a 'real' update on that topic through any of the dedicated threads.
