Firmware 5.0 First Ride Impressions

Since 4.0 came out I had nothing but problems. I had strange resets for no reason, Strava Segments crashed the Garmin, I would lose connection to my power meters and had random warnings for non-existent turns. The beta firmwares, along with gimping functionality by disconnecting it from my phone, fixed it mostly. Today I installed 5.0 and went out on a ride with it connected to my phone and with Strava Segments turned on. Everything was perfect! No crashed, no issues with Strava Segments and not a single freeze or lost signal on my power meter. Seems like 5.0 fixed everything for me so far.
  • Auto LiveTrack was a bust for me on today's ride. I never received an email (to self) nor was there a notification of it starting (no icon and lack of labeling in pull down menu). But about two hours and halfway into my 70mi ride I stopped for a coffee. Two minutes after the 1030 went into auto-pause, I received an email while standing in line for my coffee! I clicked on the link and it displayed my starting position there at the coffee shop. So far, I'm not impressed. I never had the problems reported here prior to 4.0/5.0.

Nav worked ok, but the Sharp Turn warnings are excessive -- normal 90° turns, on private, residential streets, resulted in warnings.

No problems so far with reboots or sensor connections. Not at all happy with the loss of light network function: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-1030-aa/1358648-light-network-broken-with-v5-0

    Back to a downgrade...
  • Rode with 5.0 today. The 1030 disconnected the powermeter (SRM via Ant+) twice after a longer stop and didn't pair with it again automatically. I had to remove the powermeter and add it again to get it connected. Still the same problem as with 4.0...

Next time try to only disable your power meter using the toggle and then ré-ensable it. Much simpler than removing and this usually works for my sensors.
  • I did a long ride today. Thing are better but I still got one device freeze.

Several rides (and commutes) now done on 5.0 and all fine and zero issues to report. BT (iPhone 6 plus (11.4)) with notificattions, speed, cadence, di2, UT800 light, auto LiveTrack, Strava upload, wifi on, navigation etc - all working together as expected.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have done it quite often, but usually it doesn't work for the powermeter. The edge 1030 stays searching for a long time without success. If I stop the search, remove the sensor from the edge and then search again for a powermeter, it finds it immediately. Illogical...
  • I've done a few short rides with 5.0. Much better but have had reboots before riding and just had a hung shutdown. It said it had uploaded the ride before I shut it down. After holding the power button until it rebooted I realised the rise wasn't in GC. Tried to import via the PC and GC said it was corrupt.

Also pretty sure it's still more stable with wifi off. Still.

I repaired the FIT file and it stopped short of my house. So I'm guessing the final part didn't get written correctly to the device and that the upload was attempted and failed. Why no error on the 1030 when an upload fails?

This morning I rode with wifi off, livetrack started but I got no device notifications. Does GC need to be open on the phone for that to work?

You will need to have GCM running on your phone for LiveTrack to work.
  • I did a ride yesterday, 60 km on new roads:
    - Strava segments worked
    - LiveTrack worked flawlessly
    - Automatic upload worked flawlessly
    - Sensors (ANT+) all worked
    - Bluetooth worked flawlessly (Samsung Note8)
In other words - very happy with the update!

Just a question - any ideas how to enable WhatsApp notifications on 1030? Seems to be new feature that comes with 5.0, but I haven't figured out a way to enable it...

Did a 160km ride earlier today an the unit preformed well.
One small "hick-up". When the gps started up and found all the connected sensor it showed a low battery warning on my Di2 system. I found that strange since I know that it wasn't charge that long ago. I looked at the data page on my gps for the Di2 and there it stated battery power at 80% charged. So not precisely low!
Never got any more warnings during the ride.

Yes, in my Edge (fw 5.00) there is also a problem with Di2 like you and there is still a problem. Every now and then, Di2 is turned off and on again throughout the entire activity. I can not set 10 data screens. It's 9 and when I set tenth it does not show up. Every now and then he breaks the connection with the phone (S9 + android 8.0.0).
