Firmware 5.0 First Ride Impressions

Since 4.0 came out I had nothing but problems. I had strange resets for no reason, Strava Segments crashed the Garmin, I would lose connection to my power meters and had random warnings for non-existent turns. The beta firmwares, along with gimping functionality by disconnecting it from my phone, fixed it mostly. Today I installed 5.0 and went out on a ride with it connected to my phone and with Strava Segments turned on. Everything was perfect! No crashed, no issues with Strava Segments and not a single freeze or lost signal on my power meter. Seems like 5.0 fixed everything for me so far.

Updating to the new 5.00 release and reinstalled the latest version of GC on the mobile.

LiveTrack now seems to work better (although it still took 10 mins before it started)

BUT... the ride still doesn't auto upload at the end of the ride. I can't even get the unit to manually sync, even after restarting both the 1030 and my phone. I'm having to connect my 1030 the computer and use Garmin Express to sync my rides.

I've now given up on the 1030 and will be returning the unit.

    Good luck to everyone else.

It is a pity, as the unit is excellent, when it works.
  • Abslolutely flawless performance on a 70k ride yesterday. I rode several Strava segments. Power, cad, speed, DI2 just worked. A sms also showed in the display.

One tiny note: while using the buttons on my hoods (Dura Ace 9000), sometimes the button (the right one, short press) also adds a LAP. In the settings, that button is set to change display (the left button sets a lap). Most of the time, the buttons also works like that. But as mentioned, the right button also do a lap while changing the display?! This is quite annoying if it happens in an interval.

Please take a look at that Shawn-Garmin

Other than that, nice work with v5.00 - finally :-)

First experience with V5.00 is superb.
I had to pair with the phone again, but after this
    - Livetrack is stable
    - Upload is stable
    - No locks / sensor loss

I also tried to kill the Garmin Connect app, and after a while, the Edge 1030 was able to reconnect to the phone and do the job

I think Garmin did it good this time :D

Is it better to have the app running when using live track and for text alerts?
  • First ride with 5.0 (did not even try 4.36) with Samsung S9+ paired....and still no upload at the end of the ride :( I could manually send it from the device after...but that is not ideal. I seemed to have many many more sharp turn warnings, for things like roundabouts - until 5.0 I had very few warnings, and definitely none for roundabouts.
  • All right, exept Varia Vision issue (see other post)
  • I've tested 5.0 on a 40k ride and LiveTracked worked very nicely with CGM on Android (I did uninstall/re-installed GCM). When I've saved the ride, the unit uploaded the data in pretty much the same second, so that's fixed as well. The issues I've seen is that the Incident Detection is over-sensitive now, to the point that when I break harder to stop at a red light it will detect a crash (this seemed to be the case on 4.36 as well). The 2nd issue that I've encountered is that the RTL510 is being dropped from time to time and then it reconnects within 1-2 seconds (had this on 4.0 and 4.36 beta as well).

I've re-installed the GCM app and now I have text alerts. Using live track, are people linking it to Strava Beacon or is there an option to just use Garmin for tracking? If so what's best to use for stability.
  • Did an 80 mile ride on 5.0 (previously on 4.0). Worked perfectly. Connected to all ANT sensors without manual intervention and uploaded ride at the end.

111km ride today without problems on 5.0!
Me so happy! Keep up the good work Garmin!
  • I've done a few short rides with 5.0. Much better but have had reboots before riding and just had a hung shutdown. It said it had uploaded the ride before I shut it down. After holding the power button until it rebooted I realised the rise wasn't in GC. Tried to import via the PC and GC said it was corrupt.

Also pretty sure it's still more stable with wifi off. Still.
