Edge 1030 Device Transfers

When I had my Edge 1000, I tried with two friends who had 1000's to share a file. We couldn't "find" each other. When I got my Edge 1030, I tried to share a file with my Edge 1000. Again, the devices couldn't find each other.

Shawn recently replied to an earlier post on the forum, that both the 1000 and 1030 were working with respect to this feature.

I currently have two Edge 1030's. My older one is on software level 3.90. The new one is on 4.00. I went into Connected Features, then Device Transfers. Both units sit, searching for Nearby Connections.

If I press Share Files on the older 1030, then Courses, then choose a course (Fullerton to Oceanside), and press the check mark at the bottom right of the screen, I get a screen that says Waiting for Connections with the circle, and a message that I can stop sharing the selected files by pressing the back button. After a bit, the new 1030 says I have a Nearby Connection called Edge 1030. When I select that connection, it shows that a course named Fullerton to Oceanside is available. When I try to receive it, I get "Transfer failed. Try again" and a check mark. If I change the selected course on the old 1030, I can see the different course on the new 1030, but again the transfer fails.

This seems to indicate that the new Edge 1030 is connecting with the old Edge 1030. In fact, when I look at Courses on the new 1030, I can see two courses, including Fullerton to Oceanside, that I have tried to share. And when I go to Navigation and select that course, it seems to be complete and usable. The initial direction and turns from the starting point are correct.

So it appears the device transfer feature works, just not cleanly. The old Edge 1030 never said that it had a connection to the new Edge 1030.

Does anyone see something I'm doing wrong? Could someone give me a step by step method for sharing files? Thanks!

I can transfer courses from my 1030 to my 1000 by following the instructions in the 1030 manual (https://static.garmin.com/pumac/Edge_1030_OM_EN.pdf). That's with the just released 4.36 beta FW on the 1030 and 14.70 FW on the 1000. Last time I tried it a few weeks ago (same FW on the 1000, older FW on the 1030), it didn't work, so maybe the Bluetooth improvements supposedly in the 4.36 FW have made a difference.

  • Nick, Well, that gives me hope. I went back and reviewed the instructions. I don't see that I'm doing anything wrong. I was able to transfer another course despite the progress screen never getting past zero, and receiving the error message.

When that beta becomes general release, I'll try again. Thanks for your reply!
  • I remember that there was a problem with a special character in course-names which disabled a proper transfer. I don‘t recall which character... maybe spaces, maybe dashes, maybe underscores.
Rename your courses and take out the mentioned characters, then try again to transfer.

  • McInner1, that's a pretty bad mistake. I have "Fullerton to Oceanside" now. I could add hyphens or underscores and it would still be readable, but you suggest that these might not work, either. Maybe I should just call my courses "Course1", "Course2", etc.! I'll give it a try, though. Thanks for the reply.
  • OK, I just went back to Garmin Connect, and named one of my courses "PalmSprings", then sent it to my device. Then I tried again, with the same results - transfer failed. This time, the course hasn't shown up on the new 1030, even after two power off / power on cycles. (I thought the file might have gone into NewFiles, and would get transferred to Courses. I even mounted the new Edge 1030 to my PC to check.)
  • Ok, sorry then...
(can‘t check because I gave my 1000 to a friend)
  • Same problem here! My wife and I have each a 1030 and... sometimes it's working, usually not on first attemp. Today, it did not worked. I had to start the PC again to copy the ride on my Edge. There's a bug somewhere...

Yeah, it's a bit hit and miss as to whether it works. I've found I can usually get it to work by:

    1. On the unit that has the courses, go to Device Transfers, tap on Share Files, and tick the course(s) you want to share.
    2. On the receiving unit, go to Device Transfers, wait for the source unit to appear, tap on it, select the courses, and they are copied across.

If you go into Device Transfers on both units before doing the Share Files on the source unit, then (for me) the target unit doesn't see the source unit unless I exit Device Transfers and go back into it again.

As for a problem with special characters in course names, I've successfully transferred courses containing dashes, underscores, and special characters such as ä and the German ß character.
  • Ouppps ! Still not working with the new 5.0 update ! Just tried (many times) to exchange files between two Edge 1030 both updated with version 5.0. Has the same behavior : long time to see the other Edge, try to copy the files and, then I got an error message : Try again !
  • I noticed that firmware 9.50 has a change for device transfers, so I tried a transfer of a course between my two Edge 1030 units.

The units are sitting side by side on my desk.  I powered on the older one, then the newer one, and went into the settings, selected Connected Features, then Device Transfers.  Both units are showing the spinning circle (looking for nearby connections.  After waiting for a minute or so, I picked up the older unit,  selected Share Files, Courses, and selected a course that isn't on the newer unit, and pushed the check mark at the bottom right of the screen.  After a couple of minutes, the newer unit showed "(BT)Edge 1030" with an arrow on the right.  I pressed the arrow, and the course name showed up, with a check box.  I pressed the box, and got a check mark.  Then, I see a screen that says "Transferring 1 File", and  has a spinning wheel with a zero inside (presumably the progress indicator).  After a couple of minutes, I got a message at the bottom of the screen: "Transfer Failed. Try again"

When I look at the newer unit's courses, the course I just tried to transfer appears!

So, in summary, the two units never seemed to find each other, yet I was allowed to select a file to transfer, and start to transfer it.  The transfer failed, yet I find the file has appeared on the newer unit.  Backing out to the start screen, I can press the Navigation button, and find the course on both units.

    This is terrifically helpful!
