Edge 1030 drops Speed, Cadence and Heart Rate Sensors After Upgrading to 4.00

I have now purchased and returned two Edge 1030 devices to the LBS in the past 30 days while running multiple test rides of around 1,000 miles. Sensors work fine as long as you keep the software version on 3.60.
I have a Garmin Forerunner 920XT which I use simultaneously on rides to prove to Garmin that my sensors are reliable. As soon as you upgrade to version 4.00 the heart rate monitor intermittently drops out. The speed and cadence drops out within 5 minutes and may or may not reconnect. When the speed cadence sensor drops out the 1030 immediately picks up speed from the GPS. The cadence will just stick on the last reading. You won't know this unless you stop your bike and then spin the wheel. Notice no speed until you start moving again. But gee the Forerunner 920XT works flawlessly.
GARMIN: It's the 4.00 software update that's the issue!
  • If your sensors are paired with the Edge over BLE rather than ANT there is known issue that Garmin is working on. If your sensors are paired over BLE then try pairing with them over ANT.
  • Several calls to Garmin over the past 4 weeks. No one told me to check that. They kept having me do test rides with my Forerunner 920 XT. I have had Bluetooth shut off. I just returned the second unit to the bike shop. My last call was this morning.
  • Sorry that no one mentioned that. There are several threads on the forum about this issue. If the value freezes and stops updating then it most likely the BLE issue. You can check the protocol that is used under the sensor details. If it is BLE then disable that sensor and perform a new search. That way you will only get offer the ANT version for that sensor.
  • OK. Thanks for the info. I'll have to buy another one to try this.
  • On beta 4.24 - I had one DI2 dropout for a 2,5h ride. That was the only dropout I noticed (Edge beeps when DI2 reconnects).

Hrm, power & cadence was (apparently) OK.

But it's kinda annoying DI2 drops the connection, since after reconnecting, when I change the screen via DI2 buttons on the hoods, the Edge always makes a LAP - although the button is not set to that. Hereafter this one LAP, the button works as it should.

Please investigate this DI2 button behaviour after reconnecting - thanks. And let me know if you need the fit file...
  • aweatherall: I'm on my 3rd unit now. The issue with the lost connection to speed and cadence seems to be solved and works with version 4.00. I reconnected the Duotrap S as an ANT+ connection. So far, so good. Thanks for the info!

Also, BLE sensors will present the name immediately while ANT sensors will present a number.

Yes. I wish someone on their phone support would have told me about this a month ago. This would have saved me having to return 2 devices.

While there may be numerous threads on this issue (as well as others) I agree with you regarding tech support and the lack of information. I have encountered many (I daresay most) Garmin users of various Edge models who have no idea this forum exists, much less the plethora of problems with the 1030 until they own one. This ANT+ vs. BLE issue/solution should be basic knowledge that Garmin Tech Support provides its customers, not something only learned by searching among dozens of threads on forums.
