Feature Request: Edge Activity Profiles - Default Ride Type = Hiking

I recently got my Edge 1030 and I am pretty happy with it. I am using it for cycling (multiple bikes) but want to use it for hiking as well... why buying a second device for non-cycling ?!?
For those purposes I set up some activity profiles with different data screens and default ride types: MTB, "normal" cycling, "walk&hike" etc.

Problem: there is only "cycling" in the Edge 1030. So for recording a hiking tour, I have no choice to select "Hiking", and after Upload I have change the type in Connect manually. This is annoying.

I would appreciate very much if there would be non-cycling "default ride types" (better "default activity types") and a good sync to Connect

Community, what do you think? How do you cope with this issue? Any work arounds?
  • I think it is fine as it is - no change needed. Just edit uploaded activity.
  • As mentioned in another similar thread, other devices like the Forerunner which is running focused, does allow other activity types like cycling, swimming, etc... So I suspect it isn't a big thing to add other activity types. I also use my 1030 for Stand Up Paddling, and it is annoying that you have to change it after upload on every SUP activity. It would be a nice to just set it once in the activity profile and the rest automatically happens. Although there are some navigation bugs for non cycling activities (as mentioned in other threads here) that would need to be fixed for this to be a truly multi activity device.
Having said that, the 1030 was targeted at cycling, so I'd like to see Garmin iron out some of the cycling issues on the 1030 before embarking on other activity types though. :)
I won't be making an official feature request until that happens.

I agree with iBiker65. I would like to see this feature too and can think of no reason why the background information could not be added. Is it just Garmin getting you to spend more money on buying a second device? Hard to think its not

  • There are configuration options in the GPS software that have been set to optimize it for cycling use. Currently the Edge is not configured to support the lower speeds associated with walking/hiking.

It could support it, but would need a different sport profile with its own set of GPS settings. As the product is sold as a cycling computer I don't see Garmin adding support for hiking/walking.

  • I actually carry my old Edge 1000 when in the mountains as a GPS unit, not so much to use to log an activity, but as to get me out if need be...

  • The do-it-all device is the Fenix watch, not the Edge bike computer. Garmin has a right to design it's products. As a consumer we are free to buy their design, or not.

  • @ Martin868 What a weird response.

As a consumer we are encouraged to exchange information with Garmin and other users on the forum provided by the company. Polite requests for features seem acceptable to me, as does criticism if well founded and evidenced. The fenix watch does not attach to my handlebars or let me read it whilst at speed, so is just another do-some-of-it device

For those wanting a walking app, I have just purchased a 1030 plus and discovered the Hike 2 app on IQ connect. Seems to do the job but is not very configurable in the way the built in profiles are. Only had 2 very short walks to test it with so far.

  • this will never happen. Forget it. Get a watch if you want a multi-activity device. The Edge brand and products are cycling only products and I don't see Garmin changing that.

  • No Problem, we have the same on the Fenix 6 with road cycling. I thake the Profile from my Edge and now on the Fenix it works fine.

I have only the German Version. You need somone to give you under sport from the right profile Fit file :-)

  • For trying you can the file download from her: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AiKDXcZD8LXBguYhowW6PF88zwEJMA?e=Ivj339
