Map updates (EU, 2018.10)

Hello. Recently I got EU map update v2018.10. Since the update the map loses old roads because those roads have been temporary closed on the time when you get OSM data.

My question is how you will manage map updates, I mean how frequently you will do that. The current map's version number (2018.10) make me worry your next update is coming on the next year. And the closed roads (they actually opened) will be closed for a year.

I've also just been prompted to update to v2018.10 and it seems to have no 'night' mode display (even if your data screens are in night mode the map doesn't use a dark background)?

Ive just updated after seeing your map update post so thanks and fingers crossed!
  • Garmin typically updates the maps twice a year, though this last update I think took a year.

Yeah, when they update maps so infrequently, it leads to problems such as the device refusing to route over mountain passes which were closed due to snow at the time the map was updated, although at the time you want to route over it, the pass is open. The infrequent or non-existent updates are the principal reason why the first thing I do with any Garmin device is to disable or delete the Garmin-provided maps and use OpenFietsMaps or Velomaps instead.
  • I’ve never heard, that a road which is closed temporarly due to winter-season is eliminated or not routable on an OSM map, just because the update was at wintertime.
Ky6uk can you post a section of Garmins map with such an issue?

I just got another 2018.10 update. This one is 9,7 GB, while the other day it was something like 6 GB.
  • So I have both US and EU cycling maps installed on my Edge 1030 but only the US map has been updated. When I look at Garmin Express it only shows the US map. I can log into my Garmin account and see past purchases and it shows I should be receiving updates through April 2019. Any idea how to get Garmin Express to realize there is a map update out there?
  • Each unit is assigned to one and only one region and GC will only deliver map updates that were assigned to that region at the factory.

Purchased map updates I believe come from your my.garmin.com account.
  • My understanding is purchased maps are not eligible for an update. You get what you bought. I would like to be corrected, has anyone who has purchased an out of home region OSM Garmin map received an update? One opinion is that you are eligible for one update but that has not been confirmed.

Any input on this would be appreciated.
  • Personally I use maps from this site for the most part. They are free and updated much more frequently. Beside you are not limited to the region you bought the device from, so if you travel you can download and install the map of your destination, for free. It does work.
