how to manage imported POI's on Edge 1030?

For a special event I have to import and maintain some custom tracks and POI sets on several GPS devices, among which is an Edge 1030 (firmware 4.00). The tracks i have are in .gpx format, the POI's are 10 categories. I have them in 2 formats: everything in one .gpi file and 10 sets of a .gpx and a .bmp file with the same name per category. Putting the .gpx track in X:\Garmin\Newfiles\ and restarting the devices works and I also found how to delete them.
This did not work for the POI files. With POI Loader it worked partly:
  • POI Loader issues a warning about limited fuctionality and it only recognizes this devices by its drive letter. It does loads the POI though.
  • The POIs appear on the map with their icon and their name if you tap them. So far so good
  • The POIs and the categories cannot be found in the menus on the device, like Search Tools > POI Categories
  • I cannot find any documentation on how to delete them after the event or to install new versions of this set of over 8000 POIs

How can I manage custom POIs on this device? I'm familiar with the GPSMAP series where you can simply manage the contents of the X:\Garmin\POI and X:\Garmin\GPX folders. The Edge seems to work a bit different.

In Basecamp only the map shows up for this device, but I have seen posts on this forum that this is an issue with the current firmware that will be addressed soon.
  • The Edges have limited support for POI's compared to certain other units.

I looked into this in a limited way for an older unit. It appears that Garmin is fairly conservative about changing the software on the Edges (which means the newer units work much like older units).

So, I don't think you can do what you want to on the 1030.

    (I want custom waypoint icons.)

I have an Edge 810 and an edge 1030 and POI's work fine. The only caveat is they won't have proximity warning.
If you use POI loader and only load one file (.gpx for example) when you look under extras (Navigation>Search>Extras) you will only get a list of POIs and not a file to select from.
If these points are a long way from your current location then you won't see any. You will need to select the search near a map point ( Navigation>Search then select the circle symbol on the bottom RHS of the screen).
If you use POI loader and load several POI files, then you will have a list of POIs organised in folders according to the file names.
I have loaded some older GPI files I created and they were fine but some 3rd party ones I tried didn't show up, but I have no idea how these were created and I haven't been able to open them with the software I have

My custom icons do appear on the map just fine:

  • @tjj1664 and @peteonbike : thanks for the suggestions on how to search! I'll check that out when I work on the device early next week and will report here after that.
