Shut Downs during an Activity

We appreciate the passion and feedback that the community has been providing. We will be rolling software 4.00 over the next few days and I have listed an advanced preview of the items addressed below.

In addition, we have more updates planned in the near future and are looking for specific feedback in regard to the Edge 1030 shutting down during an activity. I will accept all of the current logs that you may have and would greatly appreciate any logs that you can collect with the 4.00 version. The feedback that we are looking for would include the following:

Link to the activity (if available)
Most recent error log (Garmin Folder>Debugging>Saved>Most recent err_log_#.txt)
An approximate time when the shutdown occurred, the more specific the better
Any details about the ride before the shutdown (started a segment, turn prompt, ect.)

Improvements with 4.00 – this will be rolling out over the next two days.

Added enhanced support for Varia RTL510 radar tail light.
Updated touchscreen firmware to 85.11 to fix responsiveness in low temperatures.
Added CIQ 2.4.4 support.
Improved device stability.
Added the ability to discard the current ride at any time. This requires several interactions to avoid accidental discards.
Fixed text conversion issues.
Fixed issues with the Varia Vision data screen setup causing the Edge and Varia vision to be out of sync.
Fixed issue preventing a BLE sensor from being added if it was the first sensor.
Fixed issue where the ANT generic channel used by CIQ data fields would not reconnect when the device resumes from sleep.
Fixed issue where searching for a long address would not provide a proper result.
Fixed issue where battery save mode would turn on GPS in the Indoor activity profile.
Fixed issue preventing some iPhones from staying connected during the pairing process.
Fixed issue preventing activity uploads after saving a ride.
Fixed issue where the ascent remaining and ascent to next course point data field values did not match the total ascent for the course.
Fixed various issues with sharp bend warnings.
Fixed issue where FTP would be reset after recording an activity with a CIQ app.
Fixed issue preventing battery save mode if the timer is auto-paused.
Fixed issue where calories would be incorrectly calculated for BLE power meters.
Fixed navigation audio prompts.

Same here. Today my first random shut down with FW 6.0 during an activity. No TBT or Segment was active. Needed to restart the Edge by pressing the power button :(

Yep me too. Turned itself off this morning, and every time I turned on it would turn off again within 30 seconds. Have just tried turning off BT on my phone and the problem is fixed. Turned BT back on, and it turned itself off after 30 seconds. I can't believe how many BT problems this device has (although TBF it was pretty much fixed prior to software update 6.0.0...)

Two shutdowns today, on two different rides but both happened as I approached the same Strava segment from opposite directions on a bike path.

Confirmed: 1030 shutting down at start of Strava Live segment. Happened twice today at the only Strava Live segment on the ride.

My 1030 crashed 70 miles into a Gran Fondo today. Every time I tried to restart it, it connected to sensors then shut down, about 10 times. The .fit file is corrupt and won't upload. Very frustrating. Log files attached.

Have been following a ticket initially opened in May of 2018 with crashing issues on my Edge 1030, more frequent when following a course, but still occurring practically every time I went for a long ride, even when not following a course.

If it can be of any help, I've been told that the Di2 gear fields caused crashes, and have since removed them from all my screens, but still, the crashes were as frequent in my case.

They seemed to have isolated the crashes caused by Strava segments though, which plagued me in the first few months of using the unit.

I haven't heard much from support about what they know about this issue, and what they are doing about it. I've just recently asked for more information after having this ticket opened since May.

Although the source of the issue could be different, I've had the Edge 705, 820 and now the 1030 which have all been crashing much more frequently whenever I was following courses (GPX/TCX files).

This happened to me on FW 7.0. Several random shutdowns right at the beginning of my commute ride. Once the device reboots, it's impossible to start a ride - it reboots again. Until I come to work, something happens (GPS lost?) and all returns to normal. BT connected with phone, Segments ON (but no Strava Live segments, actually no segments synced at all). My phone is an iphone XS on IOS 12.1.4.

Garmin support were utterly unhelpful. I offered to post my error logs in the chat and they refused, insisting that I take out my SD card first (which had been used without problems on Garmin 1000 for a couple of years) and wait till the next shutdown. Which may happen in the middle of 600km race, at 3am in the middle of nowhere. Thanks Garmin for producing this piece of junk!
