Shut Downs during an Activity

We appreciate the passion and feedback that the community has been providing. We will be rolling software 4.00 over the next few days and I have listed an advanced preview of the items addressed below.

In addition, we have more updates planned in the near future and are looking for specific feedback in regard to the Edge 1030 shutting down during an activity. I will accept all of the current logs that you may have and would greatly appreciate any logs that you can collect with the 4.00 version. The feedback that we are looking for would include the following:
  • Link to the activity (if available)
  • Most recent error log (Garmin Folder>Debugging>Saved>Most recent err_log_#.txt)
  • An approximate time when the shutdown occurred, the more specific the better
  • Any details about the ride before the shutdown (started a segment, turn prompt, ect.)
If you would like to email versus posting please email the information to directly to our Product Support teams with the subject line of Edge 1030 Forum Feedback

Improvements with 4.00 – this will be rolling out over the next two days.
  • Added enhanced support for Varia RTL510 radar tail light.
  • Updated touchscreen firmware to 85.11 to fix responsiveness in low temperatures.
  • Added CIQ 2.4.4 support.
  • Improved device stability.
  • Added the ability to discard the current ride at any time. This requires several interactions to avoid accidental discards.
  • Fixed text conversion issues.
  • Fixed issues with the Varia Vision data screen setup causing the Edge and Varia vision to be out of sync.
  • Fixed issue preventing a BLE sensor from being added if it was the first sensor.
  • Fixed issue where the ANT generic channel used by CIQ data fields would not reconnect when the device resumes from sleep.
  • Fixed issue where searching for a long address would not provide a proper result.
  • Fixed issue where battery save mode would turn on GPS in the Indoor activity profile.
  • Fixed issue preventing some iPhones from staying connected during the pairing process.
  • Fixed issue preventing activity uploads after saving a ride.
  • Fixed issue where the ascent remaining and ascent to next course point data field values did not match the total ascent for the course.
  • Fixed various issues with sharp bend warnings.
  • Fixed issue where FTP would be reset after recording an activity with a CIQ app.
  • Fixed issue preventing battery save mode if the timer is auto-paused.
  • Fixed issue where calories would be incorrectly calculated for BLE power meters.
  • Fixed navigation audio prompts.
  • I got a twofer tonight, my Edge 1030 shutdown twice during the same ride:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2779773409

(My Garmin Connect is private by default. If you can't see this activity, PM me your ID and I'll add you to my Connections, or I can email you the .FIT file.)

    Other details:
    Firmware version 5.0.0.
The 1030 shutdown first occurred between 0:56 and 3:42, the second shutdown occurred between 7:26 to 10:48.
At the time of the shutdown, the 1030 was displaying data screen #1, no ConnectIQ fields displayed.
No active Strava segments at that time.
    Not following a course.
Connected data sensors: Scosche Rhythm+ HR, Bontrager DuoTrap speed/cadence (all connected via ANT+).
Connected light network: Bontrager Ion 800 RT and Flare RT, with the Bontrager Light Control ConnectIQ data field.
Other ConnectIQ apps on the 1030: AccuWeather MinuteCast widget and Strava Routes app (neither was active when the shutdown occurred).
    Paired to an iPhone 7.
  • This morning was the third time in the past 12 hours that the Edge 1030 has shutdown, at this point the word "unexpected" seems to be a misnomer:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2780971291

For the record, it shutdown at 3:25, back online at 6:06.

    Firmware version 5.0.0.

All the rest is the same: No active Strava segments, not following a course, Scosche Rhythm+ HR, Bontrager DuoTrap speed/cadence, Bontrager Ion 800 RT/Flare RT (all connected via ANT+)...

I'm beyond disgusted with this thing.
  • I've had it. This thing is a lemon. I have now had four shutdowns over three of the past four rides (all this weekend).

Who do I contact for a replacement or a refund?

Assuming anyone is still looking at the crash reports:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2783788205

Shutdown at 38:21, and came back online at 40:01 after a manual restart.

Firmware version 5.0.0, all of the rest is the same as before: No active Strava segments, not following a course, Scosche Rhythm+ HR, Bontrager DuoTrap speed/cadence, Bontrager Ion 800 RT/Flare RT (all connected via ANT+)...

So having posted numerous shutdowns and other problems, I did a master reset and then DIDN’T connect to my iPhone (IOS 11). I did the setup of pages and everything else and then connected to our home Wi-Fi last of all. No shutdowns or misbehaviour at all, so I conclude it’s related to IOS 11 on my iPhone. So it’s all good (except I get none of the functions linked to my phone, or my Strava account or my Garmin Connect account). As I have written before, one expects more for AU$700.
On a separate note, does anyone have an answer for why the gear combo numbers comes and goes on the display - i.e. they go from 36/18 to —/—? Thanks

I havent had a single workout without several shutdowns since early may. That makes the unit so far very diasappointiing. I have followed the upgrade paht both through both the official versions and public betas.

But as a top notch product with so many pro users on the market for almost a year i guess there is a stable firmware configuration and a subset of functions that at least can work. I can live witout beein connectted to my phone or strava. I can also live without my speed and cadence sensor. I can also live wihtout most advanced functions on he Edge 1030. What i hope for is a configuration that works approximately at same level as my old triatlon watch, the Garmin 920. My ideal situation right now is to get the 1030 to work with the Vector 3S pedals and my Garmin HRM Monitor. So far i have just upgraded firmware and not had time to do serious testing.

Please give any advice, for instance a a firmware downgrade advice for firmware version that can be stable with a minimum setup. . Is there a recommended resetprocedure ?

    Thanks in advance:)

PS: Has any of you returned the device due to this error?

My setup: Edge 1030 running firmware 5.0 ,HRM-strap (from the Edge Bundle), Vector 3S, Garmin Cadence Sensor, Garmin Speed Sensor, Samsung A5 phone running Android 8.0

Mine has started shutting down during the activity. Happened on mast last two rides. Working fine, then look down, and the unit is turned off. I'm running version 5.0 with an apple iphone X with the 10.4. Is there any advice about how to prevent this from happening?

So, is the thinking that by disabling strava segments it will prevent this from occurring?
