Shut Downs during an Activity

We appreciate the passion and feedback that the community has been providing. We will be rolling software 4.00 over the next few days and I have listed an advanced preview of the items addressed below.

In addition, we have more updates planned in the near future and are looking for specific feedback in regard to the Edge 1030 shutting down during an activity. I will accept all of the current logs that you may have and would greatly appreciate any logs that you can collect with the 4.00 version. The feedback that we are looking for would include the following:
  • Link to the activity (if available)
  • Most recent error log (Garmin Folder>Debugging>Saved>Most recent err_log_#.txt)
  • An approximate time when the shutdown occurred, the more specific the better
  • Any details about the ride before the shutdown (started a segment, turn prompt, ect.)
If you would like to email versus posting please email the information to directly to our Product Support teams with the subject line of Edge 1030 Forum Feedback

Improvements with 4.00 – this will be rolling out over the next two days.
  • Added enhanced support for Varia RTL510 radar tail light.
  • Updated touchscreen firmware to 85.11 to fix responsiveness in low temperatures.
  • Added CIQ 2.4.4 support.
  • Improved device stability.
  • Added the ability to discard the current ride at any time. This requires several interactions to avoid accidental discards.
  • Fixed text conversion issues.
  • Fixed issues with the Varia Vision data screen setup causing the Edge and Varia vision to be out of sync.
  • Fixed issue preventing a BLE sensor from being added if it was the first sensor.
  • Fixed issue where the ANT generic channel used by CIQ data fields would not reconnect when the device resumes from sleep.
  • Fixed issue where searching for a long address would not provide a proper result.
  • Fixed issue where battery save mode would turn on GPS in the Indoor activity profile.
  • Fixed issue preventing some iPhones from staying connected during the pairing process.
  • Fixed issue preventing activity uploads after saving a ride.
  • Fixed issue where the ascent remaining and ascent to next course point data field values did not match the total ascent for the course.
  • Fixed various issues with sharp bend warnings.
  • Fixed issue where FTP would be reset after recording an activity with a CIQ app.
  • Fixed issue preventing battery save mode if the timer is auto-paused.
  • Fixed issue where calories would be incorrectly calculated for BLE power meters.
  • Fixed navigation audio prompts.

Hey Garmin guys, are you working on the assumption that the shut downs are somehow related to the 'connected' features (BT, sensors, segments, etc..) or TBT navigation? I only ask because my own experience with the 820 and 1030 is that the one thing they do NOT do is shut down mid-ride - regardless of firmware (and over thousands of miles of testing). Granted they have a lot of other frustrating aspects, but crashing hasn't been one of them for me (unlike the 800 before them). I am probably in a tiny minority of users that have almost everything other than basic recording disabled (as I find most other things an annoying distraction). Just thought I'd mention it...
  • Here is my log Txt. At the time 18:17 turns off. There was nothing new at that time. There was several segments before with no problems. No maps, no curse, general nothing new. The roads are not the best and there are a lot off vibrations, but I think at that second I was passing a little bad section of the road and it shut down. I think. BUT from that particular peace off road I have passed the last days several times, with no shut down. BUT I think maybe it goes down on vibration. Maybe. From the ten rides the 1 or 2 shuts down at the time off vibration. This can be on the start, or after a lot of time. I don't know. Sometimes the ride it is saved and goes forward when I turn it on and sometimes not saved.
does it have something to do with the battery? If knock the 1030 on the table, it stays on. BUT during the ride maybe comes to a interruption. I only drive on good roads.
please find the problem because it is very bad. FOR this reason I changed the 510, it was doing the same think sometimes. I have read in this garmin forum, that over the years there was maybe bad sectors on internal memory and that causes shuts down.
maybe there is the same problem with themy 1030.
    You have to look everything.

After uploading new firmware, I am also experiencing frozen HRM. All other sensors appear to be working but the HRM this morning worked for a few minutes and then stayed on one rate. When I restarted the Edge 130, it would work again for a few minutes before freezing up again.
  • Had the same shut down with my Edge 820 different bike, sensors and power meter I stopped to put a C02 canister in my front tire and after I was done maybe two minutes my 820 was blank it had a thin dark line that slowly bled away, so now the only thing that was in common was my phone and GCM. I powered the unit back on and had the option to continue the ride file uploaded fine.
  • 4.24 update worked good on the device but now GE it says " there was an error synchronizing with Garmin Connect "
  • 4.24 update worked properly but now GE says "there was an error synchronizing with Garmin Connect".
  • After installing the 4.0 update I am encountering two problems

    1) Garmin 1030 randomly shutting off. This didn't happen before this update
    2) Ride doesn't auto upload
  • Mine just rebooted after uploading my last ride, when sitting idle. Here is the log for that event:
