Unbelievable worst cycling purchase I have ever made

Out again on beta version 3.97 unit froze again and had to hold power down to restart it.

Previous update kept switching off during rides.

This is the most expensive computer I ever bought and had it when it first came out and had the touring, 500, 520 and then decided to go the full hog and get the 1030.

Every update seems to fix some things and wreck other things that was working fine before.

In some cases this £500 computer is totally unusable and every time I go out I spend half my time watching it so much to check it has not reset, switched off or froze.

Surely it is about time that garmin invested time and resources to fixing this 1030 and quickly or at least offer users a refund for a sub standard product?

Friends just laugh when I get problems with my top of the range garmin and they have went with wahoo and have no problems whatsoever and everyone I know starting to buy them instead of garmins.

Looking at the forum posts and nothing but problems constantly from everyone.

Best of it is if I tried to sell it I would get peanuts for it.

To have this many problems on a computer that costs the same amount as a bike and still does is just not right and the updates takes ages and never work!!

So please garmin restore the faith of your 1030 users or think a lot of your users are going to jump ship.

Not being out of turn here as this is months down the road from unit was realised and still daily posts of problems!!
  • My worst ever cycling purchase was a full suspension mountain bike, £100 from Tesco. I still kept it but it was way too heavy and too small. Then one day my mother sold it but neglected to mention it to me....
  • ...but one has to admit: there are hardly other devices which are that versatile. Hundrets of sensors, hundrets of phones, 3rd party maps and so on... It‘s simply not possible to test all combos...

I don't know how much Garmin cares about their cycling business but they better be careful (IMHO).

Hopefuly they do a better job with flight equipment :D

I hadn't thought about that until you said that. Seriously, can you imagine these issues going on with flight navigation equipment? Garmin Flight Forum, "So I was landing the other night during a storm without being able to see anything visually outside when my Garmin froze up. After my 20 second hard reset I clipped the tower. Anyone else experiencing this problem since upgrading their firmware? Anyone have a discount code for parachutes?" LOL

    Airplanes?
  • Think I'll stick with my edge 800, still going strong and I have a spare brand new one still in the box.
  • I bought mine after seeing Dc Rainmaker's review. Thought it would be a good choice :(

Like some people said here, not even the basic stuff works, I mean stable BT connection and livetrack, thats like a minimum for a 500 euro device? No? They just can't make it right.

I had the 800,810,1000,820 and then just as released the 1030. Best of the bunch although not great on the touch screen was my edge 820. Should of stayed with it!.
Now looking at Wahoo as a mate has one which he hasnt had any issues with. Somebody should get fired if they havent already!

Just a heads-up for Garmin. I have an Edge 305, Edge 605, and Fenix 3 and have been lusting after the 1030 but have no intention of purchasing it until these are problems are solved. Doesn't look promising. Seems like they have bitten off more than they can chew in terms of feature set and are unable to get it right.
  • For me the 800 was a lot less reliable than the 1030 as I've never had the 1030 lock up but the 800 was prone to it from time to time as well as corrupting its fit files. Plus the functions people are having issues with on the 1030 the 800 can't even do in the first place.
  • So I do get nervous when I see thread after thread of problems and issues that people post up, so I guess I just hope my luck continues!

It's difficult to gauge how good or bad a device is from a support forum. If I'd read the Garmin support forums before I'd bought my Fenix 5s I'd have simply not even considered buying it as it appeared to be such a hugely problematic device that didn't really work at all for any of its main functions. However I bought it before reading anything as I was that keen to get a Fenix and was pleased they'd released a smaller one and it's been one of my favourite devices, very few issues with it at all. While I'm not denying people are having issues with their 1030, those issues cannot be as inherent to the 1030 as claimed otherwise it wouldn't be possible for anyone to have a 1030 without such issues.
