Unbelievable worst cycling purchase I have ever made

Out again on beta version 3.97 unit froze again and had to hold power down to restart it.

Previous update kept switching off during rides.

This is the most expensive computer I ever bought and had it when it first came out and had the touring, 500, 520 and then decided to go the full hog and get the 1030.

Every update seems to fix some things and wreck other things that was working fine before.

In some cases this £500 computer is totally unusable and every time I go out I spend half my time watching it so much to check it has not reset, switched off or froze.

Surely it is about time that garmin invested time and resources to fixing this 1030 and quickly or at least offer users a refund for a sub standard product?

Friends just laugh when I get problems with my top of the range garmin and they have went with wahoo and have no problems whatsoever and everyone I know starting to buy them instead of garmins.

Looking at the forum posts and nothing but problems constantly from everyone.

Best of it is if I tried to sell it I would get peanuts for it.

To have this many problems on a computer that costs the same amount as a bike and still does is just not right and the updates takes ages and never work!!

So please garmin restore the faith of your 1030 users or think a lot of your users are going to jump ship.

Not being out of turn here as this is months down the road from unit was realised and still daily posts of problems!!

Wait, wait, you're using a beta firmware and voicing your concern over the product as in bad? For real?
Stick with the non-beta or/and explain why you're going with the beta in the first place.

Regarding the comment about the problems on the support forums:
Please do point me and everyone else to a support forum of any product, where users post about how they don't have issues with the products? If people don't have issues they don't use the support forums, think about it. Therefor your perception that there are only problems with the device(s) is a bit.... narrow, don't you think?
The sole purpose of the support forums is to receive support and/or advice.

    Best regards,
    A.

Seriously did you read my post? V3.90 shut down constantly and that was non beta software so a glimmer of hope as I thought maybe just maybe the beta would give me a usable computer instead of a computer that just shuts down.

So now I have a computer that freezes constantly but doesn't shutdown and restart so how is that any progress?

On tonight's ride I will be taking my mobile and using strava on it as at least it records all the ride without crashing, resetting or freezing and uploads it no problem without checking it constantly to see if it is actually working.

My expensive ornament can lie on the coffee table as I have no faith in it and by the sounds of it I am not the only one.
  • My 2 1030's work like a charm. Never a shutdown. Just for fun (as I always do), I loaded up the beta and absolutely no issues at all. I don't use any IQ stuff or Strava segments on my 1030's though. I used to on my 520 and it just annoyed me so I disable all that stuff. I even disabled the turn warnings as they are annoying.

Maybe you just have a bad 1030 and you should have gotten a replacement.

And alessusnik for the record this is a new garmin that has been out about six months and on the garmin 1030 forum alone there is 61 pages with 10 posts per page and the majority of them is problems so perception that there is problems with the device I think is highly justifiable or do you only look at the sticky topics?

I'd like to add my frustration to the pile. I've raced today and my 1030 froze after saving the race data. No sync afterwards, file was corrupted and I had to pay 40 Euros for Fit File Repair Tool in order to fix it. This is unacceptable for such an expensive device. I will most likely never buy another Garmin product, nor will I recommend any to anyone else!

Could be a option Karl but the computer is sold as being able to do all of these features so surely it should work with them as advertised?

One of the only reasons I bought it was for the extra features
  • I’m right there with Jake. I’ve been loyal to Garmin for at least 15 years. The 1030 has seriously strained that loyalty. I’m not a beta user. From day one with this device, the features that I consider basic (stable connection to GCM, LiveTrack) have not worked for two workouts in a row. I completely regret my purchase and, because I gave Garmin the benefit of the doubt and kept trying and trying different things to get it to work, it is too late for me to return the unit. If I could, I most definitely would.

My 1030 works pretty much perfectly as well with the only problem I've had with it is it corrupted an activity which is annoying but nowhere near as bad as what people report here, it's never crashed or needed a power cycle, it's maintained a BT connection to the phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 8) and uploaded automatically plus worked well with a heart sensor, cadence sensor and the Varia rear radar system. I had read the forum before I bought it and decided to take a gamble as I was mainly wanting the 1030 for display but so far I've been very pleased with it as the navigation works well and the battery life is superb, I've done up to 110 miles now while navigating and with BT on which the 520 struggled to do.

With such a complex device people are going to have different issues but even then it feels like I'm using a completely different devices to most people here.

I got my 1030 in December, 2017. Previously I had an 800 for about 6-7 years until it wore out (and for the record had no major or ongoing problems with that unit of course until it died). After being a long-time lurker on the Garmin forums (it's always good to know what's going on with the tech!), I definitely feel like I must be one of few lucky ones with a 1030. Since December it's been used on an almost daily basis (commuter plus weekend rides) in weather ranging from pouring rain to over 50C heat (I'm in Australia) paired with standard HRM and cadence sensors, a UT800 headlight, iphone 6 plus on BT, on wifi near home / work and as most do, I update when new firmware comes out. To date, I've never had an issue with Bluetooth connectivity to my phone, never experienced a dropout and haven't had any issues with uploading rides to GC / Strava. My UT800 behaves as it should on Auto and I can control it elsewhere as needed. Uploading courses and general navigation have been fine for me and I've appreciated the longer battery life and big screen which suit my "adventurous spirit" and ageing eyes respectively :)

My only issue so far from the 1030 is I had a corrupt FIT file during an all day ride (and I read somewhere another user paid 40Euros to fix? Check the Garmin forums, there are kind folks here who will fix it for kudos) which on looking at the data when it was repaired looked like it may have been a result of user-error. All good. Separately, the 1030/UT800 Garmin mount rattled so much I replaced it with a K-Edge I had laying around but now it's all tickety-boo.

So I do get nervous when I see thread after thread of problems and issues that people post up, so I guess I just hope my luck continues!

I've been using Garmin's since starting, about 4 years ago. I started with a 5xx series model, went to 8xx model then to the 1000 then finally to the 1030. I was also using Garmin Vector pedals (since series 1), which had a ton of issues throughout it's life. All the Garmin computers had issues but just thought I had no option but to deal with it. I will say that on earlier versions the problems either got fixed quicker, or, maybe I was too inexperienced to know better or care enough. At this point, I have bikes with different power meters (Specialized, Powertap P1), gave up on the Vector 2's after pods broke off 2x in a couple months. Just ordered Vector 3's to give them a try (heard great things). BUT, what's changed over the past 4 years is that we now have multiple options. When I first started, the Garmin Vectors were the only pedal based / simple to install power meters. When I first started, Garmin computers were really your only option. All the issues with my Garmin 1030 (not getting Group Track to work, freezing up at random times, random shut downs, screen not responsive at times, early on pain getting sync w/ phone) have led me to pull the trigger on the Wahoo Elemnt to see how it compares. Ordered last night, will be delivered today. It's funny that ordering it felt like I was taking a break from a bad flaky girlfriend; told her last night that maybe it's better if we see other people. Like that bad GF, I gave it a lot of effort but in the end saw she wasn't changing and I knew that there are options out there that may be better. I'll play around with both for a while to see if that grass is greener on the other side before totally dumping my Garmin or going back to Garmin defeated thinking "it is what it is". If I'm doing this, I'm sure a lot of others are doing the same. I don't know how much Garmin cares about their cycling business but they better be careful (IMHO).

Hopefuly they do a better job with flight equipment :D
