Unbelievable worst cycling purchase I have ever made

Out again on beta version 3.97 unit froze again and had to hold power down to restart it.

Previous update kept switching off during rides.

This is the most expensive computer I ever bought and had it when it first came out and had the touring, 500, 520 and then decided to go the full hog and get the 1030.

Every update seems to fix some things and wreck other things that was working fine before.

In some cases this £500 computer is totally unusable and every time I go out I spend half my time watching it so much to check it has not reset, switched off or froze.

Surely it is about time that garmin invested time and resources to fixing this 1030 and quickly or at least offer users a refund for a sub standard product?

Friends just laugh when I get problems with my top of the range garmin and they have went with wahoo and have no problems whatsoever and everyone I know starting to buy them instead of garmins.

Looking at the forum posts and nothing but problems constantly from everyone.

Best of it is if I tried to sell it I would get peanuts for it.

To have this many problems on a computer that costs the same amount as a bike and still does is just not right and the updates takes ages and never work!!

So please garmin restore the faith of your 1030 users or think a lot of your users are going to jump ship.

Not being out of turn here as this is months down the road from unit was realised and still daily posts of problems!!
  • Thank you for providing feedback. We understand your concerns. Please reach out to [email protected] with your information and fill out the form included in the download. We are working to get these issues sorted out. You have a right to be upset about the device not working and we hear you.
  • Wait, wait, you're using a beta firmware and voicing your concern over the product as in bad? For real?
Stick with the non-beta or/and explain why you're going with the beta in the first place.

Regarding the comment about the problems on the support forums:
Please do point me and everyone else to a support forum of any product, where users post about how they don't have issues with the products? If people don't have issues they don't use the support forums, think about it. Therefor your perception that there are only problems with the device(s) is a bit.... narrow, don't you think?
The sole purpose of the support forums is to receive support and/or advice.

    Best regards,
    A.

  • BigBadJack68 has a point. The Edge has been on the market for quite some time (is it 6 months) now and yet there still are issues. Beta software or not.

The Edge 1030 is a flagship model and it shouldn't be like that. All functionality should work upon release. Imagine you buy a car that works like Edge 1030! Now that would be a disaster!

I really like the Edge 1030 (especially the battery time) and FWIW I have only had issues with live track and the Edge remote. Untill now, no freezing except from a few reboots in standby. So minor issues here.

Yet my faith in Garmin is seriously damaged (I was on the Vector 3 ride too, which even much worse than Edge 1030), so I'm also looking at Wahoo. I'm not jumping the wagon yet. But if Garmin doesn't improve over the coming months, for sure I will. I know a lot that thinks the same as I do. Wahoo has come a long way and are now a serious alternative to Garmin.

So Garmin, please restore our faith asap. Otherwise you play yourself out of the game!

  • alessusnik, If you would read through the past posts, you could see that shutting down problem is not bound with beta software, but it appeared in earlier firmware releases. Device freezing, shutting down, randomly reseting is not an issue, it is serious problem and this is major functionality, which should work. We are not talking about a few bucks cycling computer, this is Garmin flagship and perhaps the most expensive computer on the market. I agree, that not everything about Edge 1030 is bad. There has been done a few improvemens and seeing is it all as bad is a bit "narrow perception", but being angry about paying so much for computer and could not count on its major functionality is totaly justified.

Yes, this device is a big, expensive defeat, for Garmin, and for all who paid for it hard-earned money.
Speaking: please, maybe you will be able to fix something, sorry for asking - it's incomprehensible to me :)
  • But is it possible that we cannot ask for refund or any other payment?
  • I have Garmin since Garmin Edge 305, this is the worse and the most full of problems Garmin until today. I am waiting an RMA and when i have the new edge again, I will go to my store for a refund. This is a defective product.

What is so surprising to me is to see how many different situations we can face for a same device. I bought my Edge 1030 when it came out, 6 months ago, and i use it once a week for MTB. I feel lucky compared to all the complaints on this forum cause overall i did not face many problems : since v3.90 i have no bluetooth problem, no crash or freeze, livetrack ok, touchscreen sensitivity ok... I'm still very upset with round trip and popularity routing unusable for MTB usage and stress test not working... but seems at lot of people here are facing more unbearable problems.

Stick with the non-beta or/and explain why you're going with the beta in the first place.

Every firmware that Garmin has put out for this thing so far is, at best, of beta quality, regardless of whether they actually call it a beta or not... I've never had products from any other company that were released to the public in such a flawed state.
  • The entire software should be re-written every new firmware is a complete disaster even when it's working at some point it's so laggy you don't know if your touch on the screen was identified so you have to press again only to understand it was caught on the first time. Sometimes when the screen is changing it's fading in super slow motion.
I already replaced one device due to so many issues and the new one is behaving the same way.
