Does the 1030 have the annoying Unicode map bug?

Does the 1030 have the same problem as the 1000, 820, etc where Unicode maps can't be used as you get a "Cannot unlock map" error when the unit tries to load the map.
  • Note sure, with 3.90 it doesn't display unicode street names correctly, think it will be fixed in next version.

Well to answer my own question, unicode maps still can't be used. If I install a unicode map to the 1030, I don't get the "Cannot unlock map" msg when the unit powers on, but when I go into settings and check the available maps, the unicode map doesn't appear. So the bug's still there, but they're now keeping quiet about it.

The older ones do. When Garmin beefed up their anti-piracy routines they managed to screw it up so that no unicode maps would work. So, for example, the older Oregon 600 series works with unicode maps, whereas the newer 700/750 series don't. And I've had CN Europe maps that worked fine in an Edge 800 but not in a 1000.
  • It's odd that the Unicode issue is linked to anti-piracy efforts but, given that all the newer units have the same issue (and for years), it might not be a bug.

That is, it might not be something that will be changed.

Yeah, when I was working in IT we called things like this fetugs: bugs that the manufacturer insisted were features - working as designed - etc.
  • I find the Map issue my major frustration in the Garmin world. I have not experienced most of the concerns mentioned on this forum with the E1030 and still find top end Garmin Cycling Computers an amazing technological achievement and has increased my enjoyment of cycling incredibly allowing me to explore many parts of the world with confidence and not trying to decipher cue sheets and maps. Data collection has been incredibly interesting as well. That said the map policy thing is confusing and not being able to use older pre-purchased SD Map Cards due to policy changes is frustrating.
