New 2018.10 map routing not working properly

Yesterday I updated the maps and went for a drive with navigation routing set to Automobile Driving with lock on road ON (see screenshot for GPS settings), the result is that the device now gets confused and will usually recalculate and lock on adjacent roads that run parallel or near the road you are driving on making navigation unusable.

For example on a 2 km stretch of straight road segment where I am proceeding on, it would think that I have deviated several times off the route sometimes on roads that are as much as over 50 metres away from the one the car is on. As a result on this 2 km stretch it recalculated about 7 times despite no change of direction.

I will post a link to a youtube video when I get the chance to show the flawed behaviour of my updated unit side by side with the proper behaviour on my other unit. My other unit has the old maps and old GPS chipset firmware and is rock solid in navigation.

I really think there is something seriously wrong with these new maps (I also already posted about the thin graphics style earlier on) or possibly GPS chip firmware.

Please let me know if you can also reproduce this (please see screenshot for routing settings). ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1340645.jpg
  • No, this is absolutely not fixed

    Rob-Tech,

Have you tried the new 2018.20 maps on you 1030? Any idea what has changed from 2018.10?

No I haven't yet, thanks for the heads-up and hopefully it will be resolved with this update. As I don't plug in to the computer often (I even charge on the bike) and everything is done through wifi except maps, I was not aware of there being a new update.
  • Not seeing 2018.20 maps for the UK yet, so far I've kept my device on the 2017 maps, which are better than 2018.10 but still not great for routing. Fingers crossed there is an updated European version soon.

For OSM maps, what would people recommend for Europe, the openfietsmap downloads or something else?
  • I just use the maps from this link (http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/) with the Generic Routable New option. I'm in Canada, however, I imagine that the European segments are similar and I think the routing is better then Garmin.
  • Yup but I dont think that the open maps have DEM data embeded so if you are following an loaded course you will not have field Ascent Remaning
Also I am not sure if you will have all the Poi and adresees as Garmin maps

    Can you please check those?

My 1030 also stopped prompting TBT instructions after upgrading to 6.30 (APAC).
Also I have tried North Up, Track Up and 3D modes and noticed that my orientation doesn't change no matter where I face.

The garmin DEM file is separate on the edge. I leave that enabled and disable the other built-in maps when using 3rd party maps.
I may be corrected but I believe the dem file is only used when creating a course or navigating to a place from the unit itself. Downloaded courses usually contain the height data embedded in them. RWGPS certainly does. I have no problem with displaying the Ascent Remaining.
It is however an arbitrary value as the total ascent displayed in the route summary when I've downloaded a route, which although improved is always higher than the actual ascent both in the planner & the recorded value
  • I've tried adding the OSM maps for UK and don't seem to have lost anything so far, I can still see ascent remaining, can still find addresses and still seem to have POIs, will be trying out the routing over the next few days.
  • Garmin Express keeps nagging to update "Routable Cycle Map of Europe" to version 2018.10. I have gone through this update two times now, but suspect Express only offers the possibility to reinstall this update...

Is it possible to see the map version on the unit directly?
  • I have download installed Romania OSM maps , generic routable

With gps in demo mode I simulate navigation to a point and routing seems that it works way better than Garmin maps

All good but when I try to zoom out , after +800 m zoom level , Map is blank and I have only the triangle for my current position

Is this normal behaviour ? or is something from Garmin 1030?

Do I have to do something else beside copy paste the map?
