New 2018.10 map routing not working properly

Yesterday I updated the maps and went for a drive with navigation routing set to Automobile Driving with lock on road ON (see screenshot for GPS settings), the result is that the device now gets confused and will usually recalculate and lock on adjacent roads that run parallel or near the road you are driving on making navigation unusable.

For example on a 2 km stretch of straight road segment where I am proceeding on, it would think that I have deviated several times off the route sometimes on roads that are as much as over 50 metres away from the one the car is on. As a result on this 2 km stretch it recalculated about 7 times despite no change of direction.

I will post a link to a youtube video when I get the chance to show the flawed behaviour of my updated unit side by side with the proper behaviour on my other unit. My other unit has the old maps and old GPS chipset firmware and is rock solid in navigation.

I really think there is something seriously wrong with these new maps (I also already posted about the thin graphics style earlier on) or possibly GPS chip firmware.

Please let me know if you can also reproduce this (please see screenshot for routing settings). ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1340645.jpg

I have a Touring Edge and since updating to 2018 Maps it has not worked correctly - I would like to do some new rides but cannot feel confident this "soon to be paper weight" would get me home. At the moment, at the same spot - outside the Fire Station - it completely loses the plot. In the past it has tried to take me on a side road that goes nowhere. Today the screen went white. Today I did a 45 mile bike ride and it is not recorded. Thirty mile into the ride it tried to take me on roads that didn't exist and some off road cycling. This was a route that I created using the 2017 Maps. I have sent a complaint to Garmin on this but haven't had a response. I use Garmin Express to update the Edge, Software Version 4.20. I have no notice to upgrade to V5.00.
  • I've seen similar issues, documented in another thread, including this post where I tested popularity routing on one of the worlds most popular cycling roads and found it basically doesn't work

Seems like Garmin royally screwed up the new maps, we can't wait a year for the 2019 version, how can we get a fix or get back to the old version?
  • For now I have downgraded the maps to the 2017.10 version, which I borrowed from a friend's 1030 in order to work around the issue.

    rob-tech,

Do you know where I can download the 2017.10 maps? I would like to downgrade as well.

Thanks rob-tech, I installed those maps you suggested and completed a 25 mile ride this morning without being unnecessarily being re-routed - well sort of. Again, about 1 mile from home I get this Route Calculation Error. How can I go back to 2017 Maps?
  • The only way that I know of to revert to 2017 maps is to either copy the .img files from a non updated unit (I was lucky since my riding partner did not update and he was generous enough to let me borrow the files from his unit), or to have backups. Maybe someone will share the files online, however, it is impractical for me due to my really slow upload speed. I recommend contacting Garmin, pointing them to this thread, and requesting a solution (such as the old map files) as a critical feature is now degraded.

The most important lesson we all learned is to make proper backups.
  • Thanks rob-tech. I will try to find someone with the 2017 maps.

    rob-tech,

I found someone with an Edge Explore 1000 with the 2017 maps. Which files do I need to copy to my Edge 1030 and which files do I need to delete. I have attached a screen snag of the files on the Edge Explore 1000 and my Edge 1030. I would appreciate your help in the map downgrading procedure.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1370599.jpg

Firstly, make complete backups so you can always revert.

There are 5 maps on each device:

gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img stay untouched as those are the basemap and timezone maps respectively.
.sum files are factory generated checksums for the original maps, you can also leave these untouched.

Delete the following from your 1030 (updated cycle map, digital elevation model and geocode street address maps with their respective unlock and activation files):

    D4712020A.img
    D4712020A.gma
    D4712020A.unl
    D4727050A.img
    D4727050A.gma
    D4727050A.unl
    gmapprom.img
    gmapprom.gma
    gmapprom.unl

Now from the explore 1000 place the following into your 1030:

    gmapprom.img
    gmapdem.img
    gmapgc.img

This will install the original cycle map, digital elevation model and geocode street address maps.

Initial boot will take slightly longer, let me know how it goes.
  • You may want to keep you existing Gecode map as this is the only map that is locked. The unl file from the other unit will not unlock it on your device as they are key off the units serial number.. All the other maps are unlocked.
  • Now from the explore 1000 place the following into your 1030:

    gmapprom.img
    gmapdem.img
    gmapgc.img

This will install the original cycle map, digital elevation model and geocode street address maps.

Initial boot will take slightly longer, let me know how it goes.

Thanks rob-tech. I followed your instructions and it seems to work. I now have 2017 maps installed.
