New 2018.10 map routing not working properly

Yesterday I updated the maps and went for a drive with navigation routing set to Automobile Driving with lock on road ON (see screenshot for GPS settings), the result is that the device now gets confused and will usually recalculate and lock on adjacent roads that run parallel or near the road you are driving on making navigation unusable.

For example on a 2 km stretch of straight road segment where I am proceeding on, it would think that I have deviated several times off the route sometimes on roads that are as much as over 50 metres away from the one the car is on. As a result on this 2 km stretch it recalculated about 7 times despite no change of direction.

I will post a link to a youtube video when I get the chance to show the flawed behaviour of my updated unit side by side with the proper behaviour on my other unit. My other unit has the old maps and old GPS chipset firmware and is rock solid in navigation.

I really think there is something seriously wrong with these new maps (I also already posted about the thin graphics style earlier on) or possibly GPS chip firmware.

Please let me know if you can also reproduce this (please see screenshot for routing settings). ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1340645.jpg
  • "Fixed an issue with routing that was incorrectly preventing some roads from being routed on and changed default avoidance of Major Highways to Off."

The edge 1000 has had the above problem and has now been fixed
The edge 1030 car mode may have avoidance conditions can not be fixed, he will occasionally turn to bicycle mode

Sorry, my English ability is not good
  • Yes tjj1664, that issue is for the edge 1000 which has since been fixed.

The edge 1030 automobile routing was working correctly with the 2017.10 Garmin maps and currently works with the latest OSM maps, it only breaks after being updated to 2018 maps. Therefore, logic would dictate that the maps are at fault in this case and the map data must be altered to restore functionality with one of the supported routing modes on this device. If there is a condition in the software that prevents routing correctly with the latest maps then the bug must be worked around to ensure the functionality does not regress.
  • I tested with firmware 4.0 and no improvement was observed.

As a result, I have escalated to Product Support in hopes of receiving a reply from Garmin as this renders a core functionality of the unit useless and is incredibly frustrating.

I've also made this as easy as possible to reproduce and test by providing a video and the pertinent unit settings.
  • Thanks for the details and video rob-tech. We have this issue reported and are looking into what is causing the difference. I will post an update once I have some details.
  • Thank You Shawn for looking into it, I really appreciate that.
  • I contacted Garmin and they told me that the issue was fixed in 5.0 but it is clearly NOT fixed.

No followup was also provided to this thread. I look forward to concrete answers and legitimate progress regarding this issue.

Shawn-Garmin or someone else, please followup on this issue (Edge 1030 Forum Feedback <Q#:1000085> << Reference ID: 11629437K1 >>)
  • Thanks for reaching out Rob. I have let the team know you have not had success with the 5.00 update resolving this issue.
  • Hi Shawn,

Thank You for replying. For now I have downgraded the maps to the 2017.10 version, which I borrowed from a friend's 1030 in order to work around the issue. I hope that this is resolved in the shortest time-frame possible, even if new maps are required. More importantly, I would appreciate if more extensive testing takes place with future map updates to ensure the routing logic works properly with all the unit's routing modes (not only road cycling).
  • I tested routing yesterday on my commute home, riding through Richmond Park in Surrey the unit wanted me to leave the tarmac road and follow the unpaved road, despite being in road bike mode and having avoid unpaved roads turned on. I wondered if it was something to do with poularity routing but given that Richmond Park roads are supposed to be the most popular roads in the world for cyclists this seems fairly unlikely. FW5 and 2018 maps....
  • I had the same issue following the Ontario waterfront trail in Toronto using the same routing settings as you jgforrest. I think the map data doesn't have those chunks flagged as unpaved, therefore the avoidance does nothing.
