New 2018.10 map routing not working properly

Yesterday I updated the maps and went for a drive with navigation routing set to Automobile Driving with lock on road ON (see screenshot for GPS settings), the result is that the device now gets confused and will usually recalculate and lock on adjacent roads that run parallel or near the road you are driving on making navigation unusable.

For example on a 2 km stretch of straight road segment where I am proceeding on, it would think that I have deviated several times off the route sometimes on roads that are as much as over 50 metres away from the one the car is on. As a result on this 2 km stretch it recalculated about 7 times despite no change of direction.

I will post a link to a youtube video when I get the chance to show the flawed behaviour of my updated unit side by side with the proper behaviour on my other unit. My other unit has the old maps and old GPS chipset firmware and is rock solid in navigation.

I really think there is something seriously wrong with these new maps (I also already posted about the thin graphics style earlier on) or possibly GPS chip firmware.

Please let me know if you can also reproduce this (please see screenshot for routing settings). ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1340645.jpg
  • Please post a link to the activity
  • You can try "Navigation">Courses">Saved Courses">"Off Course Warnings(turn off)"
  • I didn't run the activity timer as I was only testing navigation.

I'll try with the activity timer later today and I'll turn off course warnings off when I create a YouTube video showing the problem.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
  • Please have a look at my youtube video to see the problem, the description explains everything with recalculation and routing being incorrect with flawed map style.

The first two minutes should be enough to see the problem. Let me know if you also have this as I think something is seriously wrong with these maps.

Another important thing, I put Openstreetmap generic routable new on the SD card after finding the problem, and those maps have no issues on the currently buggy unit (they behave the same as the old unit maps). This aspect seems to confirm my suspicions. www.youtube.com/watch
  • The new maps have heat profiles (popularity routing). Did you have that switched off under the routing options.
  • Thank you for your response, aweatherall.

Yes, popularity routing was disabled on both units because automobile driving was selected as the routing mode so it is marked as unavailable. So popularity routing should have no effect on this. It also shouldn't route the car on trails, and it should recalculate properly based on the car's position. It's appears that it is not using autorouting mode.

They should behave in the same manner as they are configured in the same way logically, right?
  • I would not except automotive support to change. I will give it a test. It is not a routing option I have tried in the past.
  • Other than rob-tech is there anyone else who is having issues with the 2018 version of the maps? I would like to allow the upgrade for both my E1000 and E1030 I am sure there have been thousands of units upgraded to the new maps and if the issue is a one-off I will allow the upgrade. If it was a chronic issue I would assume there would be extensive supporting posts also expressing concerns with the new maps.
  • Is anyone else having this issue? Surely it can't only be me who decided to use their 1030 for car navigation.

I don't want this thread to be buried as this is an important issue for biking also as depending on the ride, I used to find the recalculation of the automobile routing mode more useful.

I realize Garmin forum mods may be busy, but at least some sort of acknowledgement of this issue would be nice as routing is really one of the core functionalities of such a device. I also made it easy to reproduce with the screenshot and video.

In addition, OSM generic routable maps work properly so it must be a map issue.

I'd just like to add that I still don't get 4.00 firmware or 2018.10 map.
