2018.10 map different visual style, thinner elements

Hello everyone,

I just updated the maps to the latest version on one of my units and I'm noticing a revised appearance despite the map settings being configured identically on both devices. I was wondering if this is some bug or if everyone else who updated is noticing the change also.

For reference, I'm attaching a jpeg image which will clarify the situation. I personally prefer the old style with thicker roadways. Old map is on the left, new one on the right. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1340119.jpg
  • To my eye, they look better. They're less "clunky".

Maybe initially, but look at it from an ergonomic point of view.

The disadvantages of the new style as I see them:

    - Thinner pink follow line, more difficult to see.

    - Scale of objects not true to real life. In the old map different hierarchies of road are scaled in proportion and differentiated easily. However, in the new map main multi-lane arterial roads are now almost as wide as rarely trafficked residential side streets or cycle-ways, creating various confusion. Look at downtown in a major city with all the features shown, and you will see that there is no longer a sense of proportion as in the old 2017.10 map.

    - Contrast between main, residential and service roads is now worse (almost same shade of yellow)

    - No space saving at same zoom levels, only possibly skewed or offset position cursor due to smaller lines coupled with potential GPS inaccuracies.

I cannot really think of any advantages at this point given my current experience with 2018.10.

Which map looks better probably depends on where you do most of your riding. For my local area I have 3 maps. Garmin 2017, 2018 and an OSM version.
The two Garmin maps contrast thick and thin with different colours and only the 2018 ones have "active routing" . I would say neither is always better.

The OSM ones I use are heavily modified with respect to the colours, so I don't get swamped in cities and in forested areas by the background colour.
But sometimes the garmin ones are superior (and offer better/alternative routing), so I quite often swap profiles; which are identical except for the maps selected.
  • There is a new update to the 1030 maps version 2018.20. Has anyone tried it? Does it resolve the issues of thin lines and other map issues?
  • My region is the United States.

  • I will try this new update out, I currently use OpenStreetMaps so even if this issue is not fixed, I don't lose anything by updating. It's a shame that I have to resort to third party maps to use the full functionality of my GPS.

    Thanks, Iam waiting for EU
