2018.10 map different visual style, thinner elements

Hello everyone,

I just updated the maps to the latest version on one of my units and I'm noticing a revised appearance despite the map settings being configured identically on both devices. I was wondering if this is some bug or if everyone else who updated is noticing the change also.

For reference, I'm attaching a jpeg image which will clarify the situation. I personally prefer the old style with thicker roadways. Old map is on the left, new one on the right. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1340119.jpg

I noticed the same with my Australia map. I opened the old map typ file alongside the new one and did a few comparisons.
The new file has a lot more information in active routing. I noticed (just as one example) line type 0x05 has reduced in width from 2 to 1 pixel.
Also the colours have changed (at least on a laptop they have) Maybe this is for popular routing?

Also I can't remove the contours from my map

On the plus side, all the wooded areas that used to be flooded with green once they were zoomed in are fixed. Those old complaints about hard to roads in forests have been addressed.
It looks like the wooded areas my have been fixed up by changing 7 5000 and 7 10C03 from a green background to white

I tried both maps to see what differences there are with routing. In bicycle routing the route proposed seems reasonable, using some of the cyclepaths I would use. On the 2017 map with automobile routing again the selected route seems reasonable with most of the route on major roads.
On the 2018 maps, the route proposed seems to avoid major roads where it can, even if it means leaving a major road and then coming back to it. From experience this is what happens sometimes when certain avoidances are selected. It's quite likely that the popular routing is having some affect although it shouldn't.
  • Thank You for your feedback peteonbike,

I agree, the cycling routing is good on both maps. However, on the latest maps it seems as though the unit does not operate in automobile mode, as I've seen the car lock on to narrow trails which obviously makes no sense. In addition, the avoidances aren't being respected or they are misclassified as the unit refuses to route on major roads unless absolutely necessary (city streets are not major highways and should be routable even when that avoidance is selected). Yes, popularity routing should be ignored in car mode and is correctly marked as unavailable (not sure what is happening behind the scenes though).
  • Thanks for posting the photos. We have it reported and will get it sorted out.

Has it been "sorted out" yet?
  • No, unfortunately there is no newer map than 2018.10 that fixes the styling. I hope this is resolved in the next update as it makes the map less usable.

Hopefully Garmin have this is their bug tracker, and are waiting until the next map update as they acknowledged it. Between this and the broken automobile routing mode, I really wish I had not updated to the latest maps.
  • Thank you for the information. I am most certainly not updating my maps!

Rob-tech, which region maps are you using? Do you know anybody else with a 1030 who hasn't updated which would allow you to copy back?
  • On the 2018 maps, the route proposed seems to avoid major roads where it can, even if it means leaving a major road and then coming back to it.

I've noticed this on the 2018 maps and it's very annoying, it makes the adhoc routing functionality almost useless. If I want to navigate somewhere I have to create a route and follow to get sensible directions. I'm not sure if it's a map change or a firmware change but it did seem to coincide with the 2018 map release. I did try disabling the "avoid major roads" setting, but it didn't make any difference. How can I get the old maps back? Or is it worth rolling my own from openfietsmap and replacing the standard Garmin one.

Have to say I'm getting seriously frustrated with all the issues with this device now. I would never recommend Garmin again and doubt I'd ever buy another one of their products.

I've read that a number of Garmin users are now moving across to the Wahoo Elemnt or Elemnt Bolt
  • Interesting. I have no issues with autorouting, recalculations, "sticking" on roads,... navigation itself works really great and I use it a loot during longer rides.
