Can't Update Maps on 1030 or 1000

Maps download, but after it says "Building maps" the update quits and says "There was an error installing the update." The Edge 1030 has 8.79 GB free on the internal card and 28.67 GB free on the SD. The Edge 1000 has 1.06 GB free on internal storage.

I wish there was a way to manually download the file and just copy to the Garmin rather than deal with Garmin Express.
  • You might be able to get around the issue.
Garmin Express builds the map img file on the PC before it sends it to the Edge.

On my Windows machine the file that it builds is located here
    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.CYCLEMAPNA.2018.10\RMU\CYCLEMAPNA\2018_10\bc 4c6426-7f3a-4721-be23-5b142e4ab0be\IMG\006-D4677-11

    The file is called GMAPPROM.IMG.

After the update had failed using Garmin Express I manually coped this file to the Garmin folder on the Edge 1030 and it worked.

    For the DEM map
    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.CYCLEMAPNA.2018.10\RMU\CYCLEMAPNA\2018_10\bc 4c6426-7f3a-4721-be23-5b142e4ab0be\Additions\006-D4712-02\Rev_0A

    Copy DA71202A.img to gmapdem.img

    For the Garmin Geocode
    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.CYCLEMAPNA.2018.10\RMU\CYCLEMAPNA\2018_10\bc 4c6426-7f3a-4721-be23-5b142e4ab0be\Additions\006-D4727-05\Rev_0A

    D4727050A.img to gmapgc.img
  • Well "shiver me timbers" it worked on my 5X, 820 and 1030 :)
  • The update via Garmin Express or the work around?
  • Additional info. I tried on an iMac with 32GB RAM and MacOS 10.13.4 and Garmin Express 6.4.0.0 and both the Edge 1000 and 1030 failed. I then tried on a MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.13.5b2 and Express 6.4.0.0 and same result. I then tried on Windows 10 with Express 6.4.0.0 and it failed. I will try aweatherall's approach and try to manually copy the file. On the Mac it creates two image files and another file and so not sure what needs to be copied over. I will try and copy of the file from Win10 since it appears to create just a single file and try that.

    Thanks.

The workaround Alan, I still get Express showing an install for the map update but all three of my devices show the 2018 version.
  • Thanks. You might need to delete the Device.fit and GaminDevice.xml files off the Edge and then reboot the Edge to rebuild them as we side loaded the map.

Are you connecting the Edge to the PC from a cold start (fully powered off) or, from stand by or powered on mode? I have found issues where information is not always written to the garmindevice.xml file when mounting from a cold start.
  • Powered on mode, thanks for the insight!
  • This worked for me on my Fenix 5X! Thanks for the tip!
  • Same problem with my 1030, I'll wait for an official solution rather than side-loading workarounds to ensure that everything is as it should be and the mapping components are synced up properly.

    The file is called GMAPPROM.IMG.

After the update had failed using Garmin Express I manually coped this file to the Garmin folder on the Edge 1030 and it worked.

I'm also getting "Error installing update" in GE after it builds the map. I had a look in the /Garmin folder on the 1030, and when the previous Aus/NZ maps were installed, it installed a gmapdem.img of 2.34Gb, a gmapgc.img of 90.1Mb, and a gmapprom.img of 151Mb. When I have a look at the downloaded maps under C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.CYCLEMAPAUSNZ.2018.10\RMU\CYCLEMAPAUSNZ\2018 _10\8ca048de-3fdb-4dca-91b8-45102fe2ed9b\IMG\006-D4679-03, the only img file is gmapprom.img of 1.1Gb - i.e. about seven times the size of the existing gmapprom.img on the 1030. It's the only img files anywhere under the C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.CYCLEMAPAUSNZ.2018.10\RMU\CYCLEMAPAUSNZ\2018 _10 directory structure. If I copy the new gmapprom.img over the existing one on the 1030, should I leave or delete the older gmapdem.img and gmapgc.img files?

p.s. I tried the update from two different machines with two different cables, one being the cable supplied with the 1030, and all attempts to install the map failed. I also tried deleting device.fit and garmindevice.xml and allowing them to be rebuilt, but that made no difference, update attempts still failed. I tried with GE 6.3.0.0 and the just released GE 6.4.0.0, but failed with either version of GE.
