GPS acquisition time getting slower

When my 1030 was new I could get satellite signals within a few seconds of powering up. Now it can take up to 5 minutes before I get a signal. Has anybody else seen something similar?
  • My old edge 1000 finds satellites in few seconds, 1030 usually 40-90 sec, under 10 sec is very rare.
There is a EPO file in gps folder it should fresher weekly, have read some forums. Connect gc via pc to update file and try then, report results here.
  • How long is the unit off between uses? It's a long shot, but you could be getting a cold start where the GPS needs to figure out where the satellites are located. That usually takes a long time between uses or the unit was moved a long distance.

All my Edge units (my 1030 and my wife's 1000) get a GPS fix in a few seconds when outside and less than a minute when inside.
  • How much history do you have on the unit. On some models the GPS acquisition time increases if you have a lot of history in the activities folder as the unit processes these files when it starts up.

I followed Jone88 's suggestion and my deleted my epo file (which was only 3 days old). At the same time I had a prompt to update my timezone map.
Acquisition times are now back to 10-15 seconds.
Fallingrock- I use my garmin twice a day so I'm sure that is not the issue (place stop and next start are always the same location).

Alan, I believe my history folder is full. It's about 32mB and the folder seems to have been deleting the oldest files to fit more new files in. I'm not sure whether there is a 200 file limit or a 32mB limit.... and I'll keep an eye on this if the acquisition times slow down again.
thank you everybody for the replies
  • Most units do have a 200 ride history limit, but there is not really much reason to keep that much history on the device.
  • IIRC, some devices have (or had) a function to remove old rides.
