Best MTB Mounts?

On my Road / CX bikes I've been mounting out front rather than on the stem, as it's easier to glance at the numbers without losing site of the road. This would be 'nice' on a mountain bike, as taking my eyes of the trail for a fraction of a second can be hazardous. However, with the lack of brake hoods to take the impact on a mountain bike, I prefer to mount where the Edge will not take the impact WHEN I do flip over the bars.
I had the SRAM Quickmount MTB for my Edge 1000, but as the Edge 1030 is a bit taller, a little bit of it still sticks out in front of the bars. I'm not sure if I should be concerned about that? I have two more mountain bikes to get mounts for and was wondering what other people are using for the 1030 off-road. I was considering an out front road mount, and reversing it backwards. Not the easiest thing to look down that far to read it, but might be safer in a crash.
