1030 charging time? Is normal take so long?

Hello guys, I just got a 1030, my previous was the Edge 520 that charge battery super fast, now on 1030 it takes 2:20 hours to charge 50%, to complete 100% take approximately 5 hours, its a very long time. I use original Garmin wall charger with 5V 1A output.

Yours take so long to? it's normal?

  • Your new battery needs a few cycles to reach its full performance. Come back if you perceive a problem after ten uses.
  • It's taking two and a half minute for 1% of charge, therefore 0% to 100% would take over 4 hours. Very poor charging rate.
  • Use a charger 5V 2A, the 5V 1A are sometimes a little weak
  • The charging rate I talked about is what I got from 5V 2A charger.
  • Just because the wall wart charging power supply has an output of 2 Amps, doesn't mean the 1030 is charging at 2 Amps. Circuitry inside the 1030 governs the charge rate. Compare the battery capacity of the older Garmin and it's actual charging rate with the battery capacity and charging rate of the 1030. The slower the charge, the easier it is on the battery, the longer life the battery will have.

You are right about slow charging is better for your battery lifetime however this charging rate reminds me of charging rate of smartphones from 2010 and we are in 2018.. Charging rate of 2A is the minimal basic charging rate for any smartphone these days (even the cheapest), the more expensive phones will charge with a more advanced technology (like QuickCharge 3/4 for Qualcomm processors or Dash charge for Oneplus\Oppo phones). Considering the size of the battery in the Edge if Garmin would allow us to charge at 5V 2A it would take about half the time it takes now (and for some reason I don't see anywhere in the specs the capacity or the charging rate for this device). It would be great if Garmin would share that info so we would know what to expect in terms of charging time.
  • I'm seeing something between 4-5 hours for a full charge but given how long the battery lasts (20 hours or so) it's never been an issue for me. I charge it overnight roughly once a week.
