Power pack

I’ve received the power pack last week and took it for a ride today.
I does work fine, however some ideas:
1. The 1030 is charged directly when it it is loosing power. So the battery pack will charge the 1030 right from the beginning of the ride. In my opinion it could be useful when you would be able to set this on (for example) charging when the 1030 will get to 50%. So you will be able to use the battery pack for charging the radar or light during your ride, before it looses it’s power by charging the 1030. When not, you will be stuck with a 100% loaded 1030 and an empty battery pack somewhere half your ride and an empty radar/light.
2. The connection of the 1030 on the mount is rather difficult. I have tried my wife’s 1000 to connect, and it seems easier to switch the connection on the 1000 than the 1030.
3. I have also bought the connection cable. Very good, because Garmin also put some extra rubber seals to put on the USB-cable, so you will be able to use the battery pack with other devices in rainy conditions. So my wife also has the new extended mount for her Edge 1000 and she will be able to use the battery pack with the additional USB-cable on longer rides.
  • #1: RTFM ;)
    As stated in the manual,...
"Hold the device key for five seconds to stop charging a connected Edge device. You can select the device key to continue charging."

#2: I like the way the new mount works. I also have a Vira UT800 headlight and can easily interchange the light and charge pack. I just wish Garmin had a way to mount both simultaneously

    Two observations.

    1. During charging from power pack, backlight in 1030 is on continuously.
It does not make sense, it's a pity to waste energy when you want to save it.
    2. Usb ports cover is of poor quality.
To proper protect against water and dust, will be needed to use adhesive tape...

Several issues with the power pack at the moment.
The pack seems completely useless to me.

Mounted it last Saturday during Paris-Roubaix Challenge and after about 20 km my 1030 go on pause-started again-etcetera, etcetera. Instead of 38 km logged, I only logged 19 km. When checking battery life, the 1030 had only 40% battery life (started the ride with 100%, so the power pack drained battery life for 60% in only 20 km!!!:mad:) . After 80 km I only had 20% battery life so got quite angry on Garmin and the power pack. The 1030 start working again after disconnecting the power pack and 3 resets of the 1030. Tried to load it with the USB cable and that seemed to work, so I tried to connect the power pack again, however now "the other side up". That seemed to work and last 60 km it worked well.
This week tried it again in the "reverse connection mode" and it worked. Today I mounted the power pack as it should regarding the manual and the 1030 switched off auomatically and when turning on, after a few second it turned off again. Tried it again in the "reverse connected way", however the same problem. I had to reset the 1030 3 times before it worked again.

    Someone the same issues?
Bad investment.......... and quite angry on Garmin at the moment ...... they "ruined" my Paris-Roubaix Challenge a bit. I now have 3 rides on Strava: one that should be 38 km but is only 19 km and one of 106 km and an extra 21 km for the missing 21 km :mad:
  • Sorry for the frustration you experienced with the power pack Edzo. I have used it quite a bit for mountain biking and gravel road riding. Something doesn't sound right with the pack. Please reach out to our support team and we will find out what is going on.

I already contacted Garmin Netherlands about the issue. They told me to update the Edge 1030 (which I do by using Garmin Express, so that couldn't be an issue, latest firmware is on the 1030) and they also told me they are aware of problems with the power pack. Seems Garmin USA isn't aware of any problems regarding your post you don't have any issues with the power pack??

Next Saturday I will participate Liège-Bastogne-Liège, so I better shouldn't use the power pack anymore till "problems" are solved.
Now it seems not possible to update the firmware of a power pack (same as the remote) I wonder if it will be possible to solve this problem........
  • It is really incredible how crap the Garmin products can be.
I was going to buy the battery for my next Randonneur brevet of 300km, but I understand it is a waste of money. However the 1030 has bugs on the battery indicator also, but so far the garmin support did not even contact me back.
The whole software is full of buffer overflows (there is one in the wi-fi - again no answer from support, another one in stress score if you try to make two measurements), and inconsistencies everywhere (I had a strava segment not complete, but the Garmin locked in the segment, so the elevation map would only show the segment... even if it was not completed and I started navigation!), another bug on the maps where if you create a route on the device selecting the points and then you change the order of the points, the whole device crashes or remains in inconsistent state.
And of course, the typical issue with the altitude view where if you have a large route, you can not zoom in... this is there since the beginning, but no fix.
    I'm really fed up.
  • Not sure how you can determine a product can be crap from one user's report when other users have commented on over 45 hours of usage and no problems. That said like any other product especially with Garmin there is a learning curve which may not be instinctive.
  • @macroromagnuolo I will have one of our support team members track down your email and reach out.

Dutch Garmin support told me there is a known issue with the Power Pack........... in the 4.0 firmware it seems not been solved so I am stucked with an expensive Power Pack that seems completely useless..........
Makes me quite angry at the moment. Wanted to buy a Fenix 5X for running, but will wait buying one at the moment.
  • Three years later we still got the same problem. When using my battery pack . It eats the power because the back light is always on .

plus i press the button for 5 seconds but it always starts charging again.
