Awhile ago, to combat illegal maps, Garmin introduced a protection scheme into their newer GPS enabled devices that prevents the use of these maps. You'll get a "Cannot Unlock Map" message although this is not the only reason you would get this message as I seem to remember reading somewhere in this forum. Genuine Garmin City Navigator Maps will come with a matching .img, .gma and .unl file that will work for your specific unit only.
Is the free OSM maps not an option?. They are good maps.
I bought Europe City Navigator for my 810 so it is locked to that. I miss the postcode lookup and am considering buying the map again for the 1030, but am concerned that it doesn’t show on the Garmin shop as compatible. Can somebody confirm that it will work befor I slash out please.
If it's a Unicode map, then you're out of luck. Garmin screwed up with their anti-piracy routines such that Unicode maps (including free ones) are not accepted. You just get the "Cannot unlock map" message.
Thanks. Very disappointed to not have a map with postcodes available. If anybody knows of a legal and compatible map then I'd be pleased to hear about it.
Postcodes are included in "Garmin Geocode Map", which was delivered pre-installed on your Edge 1030. Look at "Activityprofile - Navigation - Maps" and enable it. ("Geocode Map" is not really a map but a database with cities, streetnames, postcodes...)
It's onlyslightly annoying that I can't use the Europe, USA and Australia maps that I already bought. Granted they are a few years old but they would have been good enough for my purposes. It starts to get ridiculously expensive if you own a Nuvi, an Oregon and a couple of different Edges and you want the same garmin map on them all.
