Inputting historical bike mileages into the Edge 1030 (Odometer)

Hi, I have just purchased a new Edge 1030 and I am attempting to set up 3 bike profiles onto the device and indeed Garmin Connect so I am able to use the Garmin ecosystem as my master recording database for all cycling activities. However, I am struggling to figure out how I input historical mileages into Garmin Connect or into the separate bike profiles (Road, MTB and Hybrid) on the Edge 1030 in order to show how many miles each bike has done. I want to be able to record total odometer readings for each bike and also an aggregated total mileage for all 3 bikes, i.e. a total cycling activity mileage. I have also set up a Strava account but I am unable to see how this can be done in Strava.

Secondly, I wish to import routes and workouts into Garmin Connect and the Edge 1030 from Map My Ride so I do not have to recreate them manually.

Please help?

Thank you in anticipation

  • In Strava you can setup your bikes, and then associated them with each ride. It will keep track of your total, as well as the subtotals for each bike. Ditto for Garmin Connect and RideWithGSP.

I only use the Edge 1030 to collect ride data and sync that to Garmin, RidewGPS and Strava. I don't count on using it as repository for historical data. It just plain doesn't work well for that whereas the services mentioned work very well.
  • On my old Edge 800, I could set the distance in my profiles. Since the 1000 and 1030 came out, they use a slightly different concept for the profiles, and they removed the ability to set the distance. So you start at zero. I have three profiles for my three road bikes, but at the start of each year, I have to make three new profiles, and delete the three old ones. It's a hassle, and, in my opinion, Garmin could have left the ability to set the distance totals in their software.

I don't mountain bike, I don't race, I don't train indoors, and I like to use the profiles as bike profiles, not activity profiles.
  • You might try this procedure that has proven to work on an Edge 1000:

Use http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ Upload and convert the Totals.fit FIT-file to a .csv file (exported as .txt).
Change total distance, time, calories and number of rides & save as .csv. Upload again and convert to
a new FIT-file (exported as .fit).

    Edit the last data row:
    data,0,time(sec),distance(meters),calories,0,number-of-rides,2
Note that each profile has a separate section in the Totals.fit file.

Rename the fixed file to Totals.fit and place it in ..\Garmin\NewFiles
At next startup the Edge replaces the old Totals.fit on the Edge with the new one from the NewFiles folder.

Please confirm if this also works forthe Edge 1030.

  • I can confirm it works on 1030, I did it in my initial configuration when I purchased the device. You´re able to add your kms, calories, rides, and time (in seconds) and it will be shown on your bike profiles.

On the other hand, there is one thing that it isn't working, and it is the "odometer" data field, if you activate this data field in one of your screens It will be shown a " - ". So sad, because it´s a data field that I liked to see while I riding sometimes.

I don´t know why Garmin doesn't allow us to add manually without this things our kms, time, etc.
  • I've just used fitfilerepair tool to update the totals.fit file on my new 1030. There appears to be a bug in the current beta firmware (3.77 beta) where values over a certain size are not displayed correctly in the data field. I have one bike on >20,000km and it displays "----" and other bikes on less (7000km) and the 7000km displays correctly. I'm going to raise a bug report for it with Garmin.

  • I would need to take a look at the 1030, but I recall on some of the earlier models there was a similar limitation that was addressed by the addition of a rollover counter.

The other thing is that the totals are not really an odometer, they are more like the trip values on your car odometer.
  • Sorry I misunderstood what you posted. It is real-estate issue where the value does not fit in the data field.
