Connecting Edge 1030 to a Windows computer - is it possible?

I bought a new Edge 1030 to replace my ageing Edge 800. Initially very pleased but now thoroughly frustrated.

I need to get a route / course /track into the 1030.

I created the route in Memory Map and saved as a .gpx and also as a .tcx. Then tried to upload to Garrmin Connect - neither upload as I get an error message saying the upload failed. No bother I thought, I will paste the .gpx into the unit directly.

My laptop is a Toshiba on Windows 10. Initially I connected the unit via the supplied USB cable, but the laptop would not recognise or detect it. Used Device Manager to update the device drivers, turned it all off and on several times. No joy. Uninstalled all the device drivers and re-installed. No joy. Found that the Garmin was a "hidden device" under Portable Devices, but could not connect and keep getting "code 45" in the Device Manager. Have tried holding the lap/reset button when plugging the unit into the computer. No difference to the power up routine of either laptop or 1030.

Tried to Map Network drive - no joy.

Tried 3 other laptops at work (1 running Windows XP, the others running Windows 7). None would recognise the 1030 as a device. Tried my daughters Apple Mac - still would not recognise the device.

So, please help. Do I send the Garmin back to the shop as it is clearly faulty, or is there a secret trick that only Garmin officianados know about to get the thing to connect?

I have read and followed the other threads on this topic, also the Microsoft "code 45" guidance, so please don't send me to those threads - they haven't worked......

How else can I get the .gpx or .tcx into the unit? (I am not interested in allowing the 1030 to create a route for me, and Garmin connect is not what I want to use to create a route/track/course as it doesn't show off road tracks and paths that Memory Map does.)

Oh, I forgot - the 1030 firmware has also updated from the "as bought" version (2.30??) to 3.70. No joy with either.

Thanks in desperation!!
