Cannot Unlock Maps

Hello Guys!

Although this is already an old and much debated issue, the truth is that I continue with this problem in my Edge 1030 ...

I've been browsing the forum, but I still can not solve it.

I moved from an Edge 1000 to the Edge 1030.
I had 2 topographic maps on my Edge 1000 that I want to transfer to the new equipment.
I already downloaded the two files ... I already saw in MapInstall ... I already used the Garmin BaseCamp ... and I have already installed 1 of the maps ... but the truth is that one of the files (that I can see in the root of the SD card) never appears as map in GPS ...

Can you give me some help please?

Thank you very much.
  • Shouldn't be in the root, should be in the Garmin folder on your device I believe. Note you don't say which maps these are, they may not be unlocked for your device.
  • Maps are locked ...l if they come on a SD card, they are locked to the card. You can move the card from device to device and they will work fine.

If you downloaded the maps to a device, they are locked to the device and cannot be transferred. You will have to re-purchase them.
  • That's only the case with Garmin maps. As the OP doesn't say which maps he has that advice could be wrong.
  • Ah, good point. Forgot about that.

Assuming you are using the free Topo maps from GPSFileDepot, I ran into a similar problem which has to do with the draw order.
I have to disable the Garmin OSM maps to allow the topo maps to show up on the Edge 1030.
You can keep all the other Garmin maps enabled, just disable the opencyclemap that it comes with.
If you keep the other garmin maps enabled, you can also turn on shaded relief as it uses the garmin elevation maps and will shade over your topo maps if you wish. -Pretty cool for mountain biking.
On a side note, if anyone knows of a way to change the draw order, that would be really cool to keep opencyclemaps enabled under the topo, so the device tells me the name of the trail I'm riding on.
I also use JaVaWa GPS-tools - IMGfromGPX to create a transparent overlap of all my local trails combined, and throw this on top of the topo maps.
I should probably throw this in the custom maps forum, but it sounds like it may be what you're trying to do.

That being said, I wish I could find a transparent topo line map that would just overlay the default garmin maps instead of completely drawing over them (as the free topo maps are typically outdated). This would also get rid of the requirement to make my own overlay map as the garmin maps would show (most) of the local trails.

Also regarding the unlock error, this might help. I have free and custom maps I've created. I don't know which of them caused the error, but my 1030 was giving me the 'cannot unlock map' error upon boot. These are custom maps on an SD card, which I had in my Garmin 1000. The Edge 1000 also gave me this error, altho it didn't before a certain firmware version.
The maps still loaded just fine.
I formatted my SD card and used mapinstall to re-send them to the SD card, and the error is gone.
I'm not sure if I had some rogue files from old maps, or if mapinstall was needed to place some other files on the card. If it's the ladder, then hopefully mapinstall continues to work (I've never had any issues with it).
