"Off course" while being on course - and GPS problems.

I have a strange problem.

While riding MTB tours (in forest but also in heath landscapes) I am very often off course (I see an notification on te upper part of the screen) although I can see from the Edge 1030 map that I am right on course. Also sometimes the course "line" disappears completely, leaving me without orientation (mostly in forests, possibly when no satellites are received). It got me into serious trouble several times now, especially riding in snowy/almost-dark situations....

For MTB tours I use the TalkyToaster maps, which are quite similar to OpenMTB maps, as the original Garmin maps do not show any information in the regions where I use my mountain bike.

What also bothers me as well is the fact that I loose satellite reception VERY often in forests, though my Samsung S4 and S5 mobiles have a clear GPS signal....

I only practice MTB in forests and dirt roads, now with 1030 and before with 820, with original Garmin maps and with Topo v4. It goes off course when i'm really off course, otherwise when i'm right on it the GPS positioning is ok. And i never had a course line disappearance. The fact that you often loose satellite reception could explain most of your problems. Did you set Gps mode to GPS+GLONASS ? That's what i use and it works pretty fine.

Hi XO, To try to détermin what your problem is, I would suggest:
a; Repeat the same ride in your forest. It should not be difficult if you stay on paths. In the wood you should loose satellites in the same area all the time.
b: If you do not use speed sensor in the woods, your displayed speed should be very unstable with poor satellite reception (reading from 15kmh to 5kmh) while maintaining the same speed.
c: You should also observe your clock to be sure you are not in pause.... when course line disappear. I do not use Glonass, I did not notice any improvement in tracking in my test in deep forest.
e: How does your track looks like? Fairly smooth or not...
    f: Contact support....
  • I'm seeing this happen a lot too. GPS seems less accurate, especially on Segment detection. I posted several times to the forums, but the only recommendation was to disable smart recording which I didn't have enabled.
