Speed sensor

When Garmin will solve an simple issue like wrong speed and distance? I asked from a friend for another sensor from an Edge 1000 unit and the problem is the same. So the problem is in the 1030 reading/converting the wheel size. Should be simple to solve because it worked fine in the Edge 1000.
If a simple issue like this one take so long to solve (more than 2 month) what can we expect for other issues?
  • I cannot confirm a problem with speed and distance measured by the Garmin speedsensor.
Which kind of sensor(s) do you use?
If such a problem really exists - this forum would have been full of comments on this issue...
  • I would recommend going in to the sensor details for the speed sensor when it is talking with the Edge and check what the wheel size configuration. The default is to use automatic wheel size.

Unless you are moving the sensor to wheels of different sizes I would suggest switching the setting to manual and select/enter the correct wheel size and see if that resolves your issue.

What type of speed sensor are you using? If it is one that uses a magnet then check the position/alignment of the magnet in relationship to the sensor.
  • I use one of the sensors that straps on to a hub and it works great. Just took me awhile to nail down the wheel size (didn't bother measuring the wheel) since I have so many wheels and tires that need different values.
  • The sensor is the one that came with Edge 1030, I think it´s the same that I had in the Edge 1000.
I put the same wheel size that I had in the Edge 1000 and the distance and speed is 25% of the real one.
With the biggest wheel size (3000) the distance and speed is 50% of the real one.
I use it in indoor bike, but i´ve tried outdoors and the problem is the same...
Last week I used another sensor from an Edge 1000 and the problem is the same. The problem should be in the algorithm conversion in the Edge 1030 because in the Edge 1000 works perfectly. If Garmin can´t solve the problem at least don´t limit the wheel size to 3000.
  • What are you riding? Is it a spin bike?

    Yes...
  • That makes it easy. Your speed and distance are actually zero since you didn't go anywhere. Put whatever fake "wheel size" you want in your 1030 to get whatever satisfying fake distance number you want.
  • Are you using a different spin bike from the one you used with the 1000? The speed sensor works by detecting its movement through the earth's magnet field. Any magnetism or electrical field close to the sensor could affect it's readings.

There was a long thread on this topic soon after the product was released where some users had parts of their chain that where weakly magnetized and that would affect the readings. They needed to move the sensor to the front wheel to avoid the proximity to the magnetized chain.

I'm wondering if part of the spin bike has been magnetized.

I use 5 diferent spin bikes because I´m a cycling instructor. its de same problem with all of them. I try to use de sensor outdoor in my moutain bike and the problem was the same with automatic wheel size.
When i use the 1000 i calibrate the wheel size using a manual value. Because one of the bikes had an computer the wheel size was around 1250 and the values of the computer and the edge 1000 are the same. Now if I set the same wheel size the values are 25%. The value that you can see in the images that I attached (around 50%) are with the wheel size set to the maximum (3000)
