Segments - seeing the positive and negative deltas

When you start riding a segment, you can see your time ahead/up on a previous/PR (shows a - figure) or your time behind/down on your previous/PR (shows a + figure). For my example, assume I was 10s ahead of PR, so it would show -10s. Then, at the end of the segment, you are shown the segment time and the offset whether you where up or down on previous/PR, it shows the opposite....in my example it would show +10s. Am I deluded, as this seems to be wrong.
What would be better, frankly, is to show the time in red or green (although not great for colour blind people, I guess) to show ahead (green) or behind (red). Still keep the + and - too ?

Folks see the same thing ?
  • If you configure a training page or the segment page to show the "Time Ahead" data field then that field gets filled-in in red if you are behind and uses a white filling if you are ahead.

I see the same, very confusing. One of the many problems with 1030.

The same happened with me. I had a 820 and segments times would show 'green and minus seconds' when ahead and behind in 'red and plus seconds' of previous best or KOM and the 1030 is opposite.
I lost a few new KOM's to start with misreading the data and stopping my effort as i appeared seconds away from the effort required!
Why they didn't use the same layout of the 820 i do not understand!
  • Alan - added that data field, and yes that is easier to see the white and red (ahead/behind) fields. (you would have though green would have been a better color choice instead of white!)

However....that was not really what I was trying to highlight - it was the case that the live behind time is shown as a positive (+) number and the infront of time is shown as a negative (-) number. When you complete the segment, you get a brief summary of the segment time with the final ahead or behind time. What I am saying is that final time is an opposite number to the live time.

So, if I was 9 seconds up on a live time, it would show -9secs in white. At the summary screen it will show the segment time and +9secs
So, if I was 9 seconds down on a live time, it would show +9secs in red. At the summary screen it will show the segment time and -9secs.
  • Let me check the segment summary page next time I ride. The deltas are based on how time splits are given in things like down hill racing. Your time is being compared at every track point in the segment file. You can think of each track point as being similar to a timing gate.
  • I looked at a few segments today and the values are correct, but I can see how the values could be misinterpretation as the delta on the segment page and that reported on the segment completion banner are using different reference points.

Hopefully this example will help clarify things.

If you have the segment page configured to show what I'm calling the "line pacing diagram" the delta times are computed using the rider as the reference point.

So in this example below the rider (me) is the arrow in the center of the pace line.

The VP (Recent Best) is 1 minute and 30 seconds under my time to this point on the segment. Hence -1:30. There time is my time -1:30.
I'm 46 seconds ahead of VP (Last). Hence that VP's time is +46. (or my time + 46 seconds)

Now when we switch to the segment complete banner the reference point is the selected VP's time, shown at the top.

    The VP's time is 14:19, I did 15:47, this is is the VP's time + 1:28 . My time = VP + reported delta

  • :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think the first sentence sums this up nicely ! Maybe I am just intellectually challenged, but this seems far to complicated for what it is, Does anyone ever use this ? How the heck can anyone translate that into meaningful data whilst riding. Seriously ?

Interestingly, 3.60 actually reverses the segment time signs now - so instead of "ahead of pace" being shown as a negative number, it is shown as a positive number !
