Edge 1030 & SRAM RED eTAP - show me the batteries!!!

I just had a new bike built. Part of the build included the Edge 1030 and the latest SRAM RED eTAP.

The Edge 1030 sees the SRAM and if I go into the sensor I can manually click through to see the status of all four of the batteries. This is good.

What isn't good is that under activities you can only display one "battery." [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","height":"640","width":"480","src":"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/995JAyul.jpg"}[/IMG2]

I contacted Garmin support and they simply could not explain why the Edge can't display more than one battery.

Using Google I was able to figure out that the battery shown is evidently the weakest of the four batteries, but one should be able to display the status of all four batteries on the Edge. When I suggested such I was told to contact SRAM??? This is nuts.

Thank you.
  • The Gear battery data field reports the status of the lowest battery in the eTap setup. When that battery reports critical the Edge gives you a warning and also tells you which component battery it is.

Totally agree with you, this has to be fixed.

Evidently it shows the weakest battery, but what is the weakest battery?

  • As I mentioned in my earlier post the first battery that reaches a low or critical status will trigger a warning on the Edge and the Edge will tell you which one of the eTap batteries this is.

Out of interest how would you use 4 or more battery data fields on a regular basis. (There could be more than four if additional remote shifters are added).

The battery status of the shifters will typical not change much. They will last well over a year. I still have the originally batteries in my shifters and I had one of the first units that were available.

The 2 derailleur batteries will change. SRAM reports a status of New, Good, OK and Critical. They jump straight from Good to Critical. This still gives you several hours of riding time before you need to do anything. Once you have a warning you can check the status of the other batteries from the sensor details. I'm not sure if you need to see the status of all the batteries all the time.

I suspect that if you needed to see the status of all the batteries all the time that someone could build a Connect IQ app to do this.

So I contacted SRAM about this issue and they were a lot more up front about finding a resolution. :D I wish that Garmin had this attitude instead of telling me talk to SRAM. The Garmin can see all of four of the SRAM RED eTAP batteries. Garmin just refuses to let us display them individually.

  • Hello,

I have a lot of connection losses between my Etap and my 1030 during my training sessions.
The link breaks do not last long. It's more like micro-cuts but you can not follow the information on the Edge's screen and can correctly read the details of the sensor as in the 1st post.
    Do you have this problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    Sorry for my english
  • It's normal, it's the way the Etap is designed, it goes to sleep after a while when you're not changing speed to use less battery
  • Thank you for your quick reply.
Can we have the number of gear changes made during a session with the Etap?
I seem to have seen a graph with garmin connect.

I think that it is out of interest for you but if SRAM is offering the data I want to see it although I have to set an entire Data Screen Page with up to 10 battery fields.

This has to be implemented among other things.

Edge 1030 does record the amount of gear changes, and that can be seen on the summary page on the device after the session. But I don't remember seeing the gear change graph anywhere.

Why are you saying "has to be implemented"? Edge 1030 is providing the info about the lowest charged battery, which IMO might be enough info for the most users.
