Strava live segments not showing while following a course

Title says it all.

Strava live segments not showing while following a course. Latest firmware. Yes, the segments are starred. Is that how it's supposed to work?

Also the device crashed a few times.
  • They will only show while following a course if the course has been download from Strava using the Strava Route app on the Edge.
  • Why? Why would they not at least give the option to enable this on normal routes?? It's virtually impossible to get a GPX uploaded to strava routes, even with that strava labs 'uploader' that fails 90% of the time.

  • It is because the Strava Route app takes the course from Strava and embeds your segments from Strava that the course runs over in to the course file before downloading the file in FIT format to the Edge.

I would assume that there is an expectation that the courses are built on Strava rather than on another site and then uploaded to Strava.
  • I would assume that live segments that have been previously starred and are able to pop up when I'm not following a course, would be available even when I'm following a course even if said course is created by the garmin course builder and not strava's.

The garmin manual completely ignores live strava segments. It just refers you to strava.

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/...rmin-Edge-1030

There it states : "Can I use Live Segments on my Garmin while following a course? Yes - the segment must start and end on the course. "

Nowhere it states it must be a course created with strava.

Regardless, it would even be possible for garmin connect to send the GPX to strava, extract the segments, embed them in the course, and send the route to the device.

No, this is again an example of poor programming on Garmins side. (Others being frequent crashes, USB connection issues, the inability to maintain a single history of activities and training load even when using a fenix 5 and 1030)

Unfortunately, there is nothing better yet.
  • Agree, poor design/implementation decision if this is how it's supposed to work. I don't design my courses with Strava, I prefer Ride With GPS as it's a much better tool. One of the features that made me upgrade from 1000 to 1030 was the ability to use Live Segments while following a course. I haven't tested the 1030 Live Segments yet, but I'm really disappointed to hear about the limitations of the current implementation.

I have a 1030, my Strava segment are synced (they show up on the map while following a course) but Strava segments don't trigger while following a course.
Is this a bug or is there something I need to do to active them?
  • Segments will only show when executing a course if the course file contains references to those segments. Currently only courses loaded to the Edge via the Strava Route connect IQ app have these references.

That makes sense, and it works fine on my Edge.
However, I have other problem, as soon as I open Strava Route and download course, Edge switches to English language (I am using Croatian). Anyone noticed similar issues?
I reported it to Strava, so far nothing.

OK. So let me get this right (and apologies if it's been said before I'm just trying to get it straight in my head).
    • If I use the Strava Routes App on the 1030 I can download a route (created in Strava) onto my device. When following that route, live segments will be triggered.
    • This downloaded route then exists on my device, independently of the Strava Routes App. i.e - I don't need to use the Strava Routes App to follow the route (just to download it).
    • The Strava Routes App is different and distinct from the old Strava IQ app which was available for the 1000 in which you a followed the route inside the IQ app (and wasn't very good).
    • To use the Strava Routes App on the 1030, my device needs to be connected to my phone via Bluetooth (which in turn needs and internet connection). But once the route is downloaded, I can turn Bluetooth off.
    • I cannot use the Strava Routes App with WiFi directly on the device.
    • I cannot use the Garmin Express App to manage to select the routes Strava Routes App downloads (as you can manage some IQ apps settings this way).
    • If I want to replace the route on my device with 'Segment Enabled' routes. I should delete the existing routes from my device and re-download them with the Strava Routes App.
    • If I download a GPX (from Strava) and place it in NewFiles on my 1030 (as I used to add routes) and then follow that route, live segments will not trigger.
    • Garmin and Strava have been collectively woeful in explaining how all this works.

It also begs the question is there a specification anywhere for a route file (GPX or otherwise) to describe how segments are embedded in routes?

    Thanks
  • Your description is correct. The GPX spec does not support the the inclusion of segment UUIDs and the required start and stop course points that are needed to embed a segment in a course. This is supported in the FIT file format, which is why the Strava Route app creates and delivers FIT files.
